Meet Robin Burrill of Curb Appeal Renovations in Keller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Burrill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Rob Mathews, my husband, started our company in 1995. At the time, he was a paramedic/flying on Cook Children’s helicopter and since he has so much free time, he was keeping busy by doing small remodels/handyman work. Once he had to pull his first permit in 1995 he had to get what was called a business license then and his company was formed! Rob had been around the building trades his whole life, his father owned a flooring company so he started running trim/installing flooring at a very early age. After serving in the Marines, he was a firefighter/paramedic and again, in his free time, he started framing, wiring, plumbing new homes and remodels.

I have a bachelor of fine arts degree with a major in interior design and a minor in industrial technology from UNT. My early career in interior design was commercial focused…it wasn’t until I met and joined Rob in his company that I switched my focus to residential.

Rob and I both believe strongly in education and we’ve gone on to earn our industry certifications – Rob is a Certified Remodeler through the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and he’s a Certified Graduate Remodeler through the National Home Builder’s Association. I’ve passed the NCIDQ exam – the interior design industry’s recognized indicator of proficiency in interior design principles and a designer’s commitment to the profession and I’m also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist through the National Home Builder’s Association.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If a business owner tells you it’s been a smooth road, I’d say they’re very optimistic! There’s struggles along the way, the economy directly affects our business, but most importantly, it’s life that throws you curve balls! From an auto-immune disease to breast cancer and our family having health issues, we’ve been on many life detours…but we love what we do and we’re very thankful that our business allows us to take the time we need to heal and help our loved ones as well.

Curb Appeal Renovations – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets us apart…Robin and Rob of course! No… seriously, we are the only husband and wife team that I know of that has someone that is so knowledgeable about construction as Rob and has an interior designer that is industry accredited on staff. Rob is very detail oriented – I’m more concerned about making sure we bring to life exactly what our clients want. Our goal at the end of every project is to have our clients say WOW – it’s even better than what I expected!

Our clients don’t have the time, expertise or desire to do the needed research to complete their remodel. We walk them through each step of the project, from the first meeting all the way through the end, even helping them with window treatments or furnishings. We use a 3D CAD program so their project comes to “life” right in front of their eyes. We can move doors, cabinets, appliances right there on the “big screen”…making sure that there are no questions as to what will take place once we start construction – it’s right there for them to see and virtually walk through their space.

Our company mission is to make a difference in people’s lives…and we live that every day. We truly want to make that difference, not just by remodeling their home today, but building a relationship that lasts forever…we are now working on previous client’s children’s homes! One of the most heart touching projects was for a couple…he had had a stroke several years prior to us remodeling their home. On a Monday night I happened to open an email from his wife…he had just died over the weekend and she wanted to let me know what a difference the bathroom had made in their lives…you see he had become very ill and when we remodeled the bathroom, we did it for him, so in the future he could use the bathroom if he ended up wheelchair bound…none of us knew that he would die in less than a year of us completing their project, but thankfully what we did allowed her to keep him at home and be with him all the time to care for him…THAT is why we do what we do!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
WOW! Met Rob earlier in life?! I really don’t know what we would have done differently. I’ve learned through my cancer journey that you need to live with no regrets…I don’t dwell on what I should have done…we really look to the future and enjoy each and every day…we live FULL OUT!
