Meet Cynthia Akita of Gyidi Web Design & Consulting in The Colony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Akita.

Cynthia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been a creative. From childhood, I was interested in “The Arts”, took classes at the local Art Museum, and grew up to teach underprivileged children how to do art projects during their after-school program. I have always been fascinated with design and was slightly introduced to it from a young age as my sister and I helped my mom with event design for many years.

I’m originally from the East Coast and attended UMASS Amherst, where I completed my undergraduate studies and also started my first business, a fashion line, at the age of 18. I was completely self-taught, and my experience with my fashion line was the catalyst for my web design business. I needed a website, but couldn’t afford to pay someone to design it for me, and so over the years, I gained more and more experience with creating websites, and it has brought me to where I am now. I would help friends by designing their websites as a hobby and recently a friend of mine implored me to take it seriously and start a business, as there was a need for my services in the business world. I listened to her advice and started Gyidi Web Design & Consulting. Gyidi means “faith” or “to believe” in my native language Twi (Ghana, West Africa). I’m excited to now help business owners fulfill their vision through visual and functional design.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Pursuing your passion is the greatest thing you can do! Let’s not confuse that with it being easy. Anything that is worth having is not something you acquire easily. You need to work hard, dedicate time, resources, sweat, and definitely some tears. It takes strong-will to battle through the multiple “no”s and the various obstacles that you will face. Even with all of these things considered, going into business has been the most rewarding experience of my life. It has made me a better person and has allowed me to look at people with a wider lens. Running a business is not easy in any way, but my passion drives me to continue. The happiness and satisfaction that I receive from my clients help me to continue. Knowing that friends and family look up to me is also a means for me to continue this journey. Sacrificing for my business now will make all the difference when I have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labor in the future.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gyidi Web Design & Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally don’t believe in luck, however, I know that God has definitely ordered each and every one of my steps. He has exposed me to the right people and the right opportunities when I needed them. So, no, there’s no luck involved, just grace and blessings!
