Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Bedgood.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cynthia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always loved creating things. Whether that was through drawing, painting, or sewing, I loved using my hands to bring things to life. When I was 18 years old, I received a point and shoot camera as a high school graduation gift and fell in love with being able to capture a different medium of art. During nursing school, I dreamed of starting my own photography business, but it wasn’t until about seven years later that I took that first step in making that dream a reality.
After I had my twin daughters, I found myself struggling to figure out my new role from a full-time nurse to now a stay at home mama. One day I decided to pick up the DSLR camera that I had purchased a few years back and start shooting with it. The familiar feelings of joy from creating art soon returned, and I was determined to figure out how to use my camera. I read every book and article I could on photography and watched hours of YouTube videos during nap and bedtime for my kids. As I continued to grow in this new skill, I started to desire to start creating for others too. Soon my business A Lovely Journey Photography was born, and what an honor it has also been capturing so many beautiful moments in time over the past few years for my clients through the viewfinder of my camera.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not. Starting a business with really no idea of what I was doing has been full of many mistakes, trial and error, late nights working, and even a few tears here and there. I think one of the biggest challenges for me has been juggling motherhood and business together. I am learning that to make things work. I must constantly be evaluating how best to align both in whatever season I may be in. I think it is important for me to be honest with myself when it is ok for me to take on a lot in my business and when I need to take a step back. There have been and will continue to be seasons of both because navigating the waters of motherhood is a constant ebb and flow.
Please tell us about your business.
I am a natural light, lifestyle photographer. As a lifestyle photographer, I aim to create moments of authentic emotion and connection between my clients in their images. During a typical session with me, I will guide my clients with different prompts to bring about these moments to capture. Rarely ever do I have my clients sit and smile at my camera. I love it when after a session is over with a client will tell me “wow, that was fun and not the typical session we were expecting” I specialize in families, maternity, newborns, seniors and couples photography. My desire in my business is to create a community and environment of inclusions for everyone and all types of love. It is a true honor getting to step into each of my client’s lives and capture their story in whatever season of life they may be in.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Started sooner! I wish I would not have waited so long to take the first step in starting my business because I was afraid of failing.
