Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Harper.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been singing all my life since I can remember talking. I grew up listening to Toni Braxton, Anita Baker, Sade, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson. Those are some of my biggest influences. In our house, music and dancing was a huge part of everyday life. I joined the choir in school around the age of 10 and was in every possible camp, school or church production of anything that involved singing. I moved to NYC for college to pursue my dreams of music and theater. While in New York, I realized that the possibilities to create were endless. My heart is forever in NYC.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Somewhere in between smooth and crunchy peanut butter!!! Being gifted a passion for music is difficult in itself because regardless of how talented you are, competition is heavy and never-ending. I have been turned down for many opportunities that I felt were perfect for me. In that same token, I have had some life changing, once in a lifetime experiences! Being creative is all about ebb and flow. I don’t know many successful people in any profession that will say their road to success was not painted with troubled times. Trying to figure out your voice and how you want to convey your message to an audience can be difficult because you have to do some serious self evaluation to be your most authentic self and project your love for the music to the people!
Please tell us about Dana Harper.
I am an artist, a creator, a musician, a healer, a lover. I was born with the gift of singing and up until this point in my life nothing has satisfied or made me feel more happy than singing and creating music. I have had many amazing opportunities granted to me such as being a top 20 cast member on NBC’s The Voice! I’d still say though that nothing compares to having someone say, “your voice/music helped heal me through a difficult time in my life” or “you inspire me to love myself and follow my dreams no matter what try’s to stop me!” That is what makes me proud. The ability to connect with other humans and spread the love.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I believe that every moment of our experience is just as it was supposed to be. What’s in the past is history which is also a lesson that I can use moving forward.
