Today we’d like to introduce you to Daneka Lane.

Daneka, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working in the corporate world for about 4 years, I decided it wasn’t for me. Over the years, I had worked many jobs, and was never happy with any of them. In the early years of my adult life, I was told that being a hairstylist wasn’t a career. I always thought different in the back of my head. I knew I could be and do what I wanted to do if I just believed.

I decided to go to school in 2012 to complete Cosmetology. I graduated in 2013. I then moved to Dallas, TX and started working for Good Hair Day Salon. Under the guidance of the salon owner, LaTarah Edmond, I have learned so much about the industry. She has mentored me to become my very own salon owner. While renting a suite at Good Hair Day, I established my own business Nu Roots Beauty Studio.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. It has taken three years for me to get to this point. The biggest struggle is trying to separate business from personal. It takes time to gather what finances are going to be for business and what finances are needed for personal use. It’s so easy to mess that up when you are your own boss. Dealing with different people can be challenging as well. You never know what to expect. Everyone is different so you must know how to adapt to different personalities. Also, knowing your market can be a struggle. It is very important to know who your target audience is. If you don’t know who you want to attract, you will end up with all kinds of people.

Nu Roots Beauty Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is Nu Root Beauty Studio. We are a company that specializes in natural and healthy hair. We are known for natural hair care and braids. We do all hair types and styles.

I am most proud of the company for the quality consultations and shampoos we give. I clients really appreciate being educated about the products used, the love we put into our shampoos and the ability to maintain their hair until their next appointment.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as the ability to achieve a goal or plan that someone has started. If you have plans to learn to tie your shoe in a day and you accomplished it, you have succeeded.
