Meet Daniel Trevino of The Box Street Social

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Trevino.

Daniel, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I met chef Edward Garcia in 2013 at King William District Crossfit in Downtown San Antonio. We quickly became friends having the connection of him being a chef and me being a restaurateur. On Sundays, Edward would have what he termed “Sunday Socials” at his house. Briefly described, a Sunday Social was just that, a gathering of friends, family, acquaintances, etc that Edward would serve food to all day. From my point of view, it was quite impressive. For one person, to gladly invite and serve so many people in one day, is not only not easy, but a very gracious characteristic. We started talking more and more about doing something real.

The first thought was a restaurant. But at the time, the food truck scene was coming and expected to grow to become the next way to dine. So we custom ordered a Food Trailer and bought an old Dodge to pull it. The name The Box Street Social not only flowed well saying it, but it embodied how we started. Crossfit gyms are known as “The Box”; we knew we would be parking and creating “Street Food”; and we wanted to keep the same spirit of bringing people of the community together like when he would host the ” Sunday Social”. We began advertising/marketing on facebook and to our sphere around us and began booking gigs.

We also developed a really good relationship with Alamo Beer Co. one of the biggest local breweries in San Antonio. It was a great partnership. They have a beautiful brewery and beer hall, and we provided chef-inspired street food to pair. There, and we’re very thankful for our time there, we developed a good name, an excellent following, and kept improving our craft throughout the process. We were sought after by guests that came and they began asking us if we catered. We began catering to baby showers, birthdays, private dinners, school functions, museum functions, big city events, music festivals, and then were hired to do a wedding. From here, we transitioned our business as a food truck to a catering business.

The business continues to grow and we keep raising our bar of services higher every year. We are now a “one-stop-shop” full catering business offering not only a custom cuisine but rentals of high-quality plates, flatware, bar set-ups, and more. We offer our professional styling service that will turn any venue or location into a beautifully themed experience. We offer bar service as well where we have trained professional bartenders that we meet with to pair the perfect cocktails with the food and theme. The combination of our services creates for a great experience for our clients that are incredibly satisfied for any event that we are hired for. Now The Box Street Social is excited, proud, and humbled to announce that we have been chosen to go into a brick in mortar in the heart of San Antonio called Hemisfair Park! This is our next adventure and we are so anxious to express our art through a brick and mortar location.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any business venture is a smooth road. But the struggles and road bumps along the way are also a great learning experience.

The Box Street Social – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have been in the catering business for four years now. We have grown the business and will be going brick and mortar by March of 2020.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I really believe that success has to do with life overall. I believe we should wake up and be our best at what we’re doing at the time. I instill this into our team as well. If I’m going to own a restaurant, I’m going to do the best I can do. That doesn’t mean I am the best, it means I have the goal to continue to get better every day. This applies perfectly for everyone and this is the message I send to our team/employees to create our culture. If you’re a server, cook, busboy, dishwasher, host, any position really, you are a very important part of the ecosystem of the business. So be the best so that your part of the system is very well done and when it all comes together, it is very good.

That’s Success
