Meet Dashea Farber of Tanique Airbrush Tanning in Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dashea Farber.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a kid, I was a huge advocate of tanning. I did everything that we now frown upon. With the knowledge that has been brought to surface of what the sun and tanning beds does to your skin as well as the risk of skin cancer; it didn’t really stop me until a little over 5 years ago when I started noticing my skin taking a turn for the worse. You always think it will happen to everyone but you.

But, I understood skin and how it works with tanning, especially in the beds. There’s a certain process that achieves the best tan fastest without overexposure. Not that I recommend it anymore.

Right around the same time, I found a company that would train me to airbrush and work for them. In which I did for 2.5 years. I basically gained the knowledge and experience of every position in that company from technician to trainer, to business development and then salon operations manager. It was an amazing experience and loved working with my clients to make sure they had the best experience and outcome possible. Then I decided to open up my own company. And, let me tell ya. It has been amazing. I have grown even more in my knowledge and passion because it’s what I enjoy and can say I’m really good at it. I love my clients and the relationships I have with them. It’s amazing what a tan does. And how it makes people feel. I’m glad I have the opportunity to provide that for them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh there’s always struggles. When I worked for the company whom hired me. There really wasn’t a strict training regimen. You learned the general technique, but some important huge factors were left to the wayside. And because this company had many locations, the owner wanted everyone to utilize the same exact technique straight across the board. So she implemented a strict training protocol. It was very involved and detailed. Which was great. Still, every technician wanted to put their own little twist on it. Including myself. Lol. So, I had to change up a few times in my technique. I would say I was a little bugged at first. But then it became a challenge, and I was always up for a challenge. Then I would master it and voila.

It definitely made me better at what I do. Tanning is not as easy as people think. There is an art and science to it.

When working as an employee vs. being an owner; you don’t get to see both sides, until you’ve worked both sides. Now that I have, you learn quite a few things. You always feel like you should always be doing more. Always think before you react. And establish clear boundaries from the beginning. I’m learning that on a day to day basis. I guess that’s a lifelong lesson.

Overall, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else doing anything else. I get to express my artistic side while getting the opportunity to meet really outstanding variety of people.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tanique Airbrush Tanning – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I would probably say my understanding of what a client wants and needs. Obviously the goal is to have color, but look natural. I also match my clients’ natural skin undertones with proper solution which is huge with the outcome of your tan.

Another aspect is my detailed pre care and aftercare instructions. I am adamant about telling EVERY NEW client about the aftercare of their tan, no matter how many times they have previously tanned with other companies. A lot of places don’t tell you cause it’s a numbers game. The faster your tan fades; the quicker your back. My tans can last anywhere from 5-14 days depending on how well the CLIENT takes care of it and their lifestyle. I give all the information to do so. Not only will they have great longevity, but a nice even fade out. And I literally have clients tell me that they did not know at least 2 off the 3 MOST important details of my aftercare. And they had tanned a million times. It really is the foundation of your tan. I can make sure you don’t look orange or streaky, but the fade out is all up to the customer. I just provide all the information. And it works!!!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m really content with where I am in my business. I don’t have to be a huge. I just want to be the BEST!!! I would like to get the opportunity to tan celebrities and go on set and grow there. But, I’m happy with it just being me, doing what I do best. And that’s tanning Dallas and its visitors.
