Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jones.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working for UPS while attending the University of Georgia. I held various positions including driving package cars (the “brown trucks”). After collage, I transitioned into management in an Information Technology position while going to graduate school. A group of us left UPS to start our own technology business and after a fun, 12 year ride during the tech bubble, we sold the company which provided the investment capital required to open my first The UPS Store in the neighborhood I live and love to this day…Lower Greenville!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening a franchisee has its pluses and minuses like any business endeavor. One of the advantages is the vast resources to help you along the way. Mainly due to the support of The UPS Store network, the road has been fairly smooth.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The UPS Store – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The UPS Store network is the world’s largest franchiser of retail shipping, mailboxes, printing and business service centers. Today, there are more than 5,000 independently owned The UPS Store locations in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. The UPS Store, Inc., franchiser of The UPS Store brand, is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Parcel Service (UPS).
As more and more people are ordering online, we are primarily known as a drop off location for returns from companies like Amazon, Zappos, Chegg (book returns) and thousands of more. Our largest growth area is in our printing business where we print items like business cards, flyers and presentations.
Our roots are in our Mailbox services that basically serve like a PO Box but our customers receive an actual physical street address and received text/email notifications when mail and packages arrive. Each store has 100’s of customers who basically run their business and personal activities from our store…each one with a unique and interesting story!
I currently own three (3) stores. Each one is somewhat unique in what they specialize it. My first store on E. Mockingbird Lane caters to the typical neighbor living in the Lower Greenville/Lakewood areas. We are currently shipping lots of care packages for the little campers off to various summer camps. Being so close to SMU, we also do lots of text book returns and campus move outs. We even setup a remote kiosk location on the SMU campus during the peak move out period in May!
The second location is located in the Dallas Design District off of N. Riverfront Blvd. This store is more like a warehouse versus the typical store located in a shopping center. This store specializes in shipping artwork and various antiques for the plethora of Auctions Houses, Galleries and Antiques stores in the area.
The third store is located in a Hotel located in the Downtown Dallas Arts District. This store primarily serves as the business center for Hotel guests and exhibitors visiting Dallas from all over the world. Like most hotels in Dallas, we are currently inundated with Mary Kay associates coming in from all over the world.
Each store has it unique personality that comes from the surrounding neighborhoods. Regardless of the location, we strive to provide quick, convenient, world-class customer service!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently we are focused on growing and maximizing the potential of the three (3) stores. We are always looking for good areas to open new stores but nothing in the immediate future.
