Today we’d like to introduce you to David Kaelin.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After leaving a position as a store manager at EB Games, and after accumulating an enormous personal collection of vintage gaming consoles, games, and accessories – I decided to open my own retro gaming store. At that time, classic video games were not in nearly as much demand as they are today, but I made a bet on the fact that there were many others like me who still loved the old games, but they just needed to find a new place to buy and sell them. Thus, Game Over Videogames was born, and the first store opened in Austin, TX in 2005. We entered the Dallas market about five years later, and we now have three locations to serve the DFW market – Fort Worth on S. Hulen; Arlington at I-20/Cooper; and our newest location in north Dallas at Beltline/Marsh in Addison.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Running a small business is always a challenge as there are many ups and downs along the way. We have to work hard to constantly attract new customers to our stores, keep amazing inventory constantly coming into all stores, and we only hire and train the best retail store employees.
Please tell us about Game Over Videogames.
We are already well known around Texas and beyond as THE place to go for retro video games. Our stores are the biggest, our staff is the friendliest, and we maintain the best-organized video game stores of this type. We work hard every day to keep that reputation up, and we are proud to offer our customers such a great shopping experience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We grew very quickly in the beginning, and my best advice I can give to other entrepreneurs out there is to go slow, build the company/store/market very well first, then expand slowly as demand dictates. We now take a very careful and slower approach to opening new stores to make sure that we will be successful in each new location.
