Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Kylie Knight.
David and Kylie, please share your story with us.
I started doing magic when I was 12 years old after reading a book about Harry Houdini. I would perform at parties and restaurants around the Dallas area. I would also attend the Dallas Magic Clubs where I was able to learn from some of the local professionals.
In college, I had the chance to “run away with the circus” and join a touring illusion show. I spent 3 years traveling the world with one of the foremost inventors of magic. It was during this time that I met Kylie (an Australian native) in Littleton, Colorado and we fell in love.
Shortly after marrying, we moved to Lynchburg, Virginia and joined another show – this time together. For 7 years, we traversed the globe as part of one of the largest and most highly-acclaimed touring illusion companies in the United States.
In 2007, we left the safety of working for others and moved back to the Dallas area to pursue what success might look like on our own.
Now entering our 18th year of marriage, we love that we get to bring joy and magic to audiences together. Our show has allowed us to entertain as a couple all across the country as well as internationally. In 2014, we had our own TV special – The Magic of Christmas. As a team, we deliver a high-energy, family-friendly show of comedy and illusion for churches, corporations, non-profits, theaters and cruise ships.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an artist is never a smooth road. It is a constant struggle to balance art and commerce. You have to have the right blend of commercial elements in addition to something that is going to stretch your audience and help to set you apart from others.
Also, because our chosen niche is churches and our chosen medium is illusion, that sometimes opens up interesting conversations with well-meaning people questioning how can “magic” be used in the church.
Finally, while social media and the internet have made it, in a lot of ways, easier to reach out target markets, it has also made it more difficult. You have to put out enough information about what you do to entice people but not too much that they feel like they have seen everything you do. You have to keep some element of mystery (especially with magic). Also, the marketplace is so saturated that you have to really do something unique and special to stand out against the noise.
We continue to learn and grow and create magical memories for our audiences that leaves them with a smile on their face and joy and wonder in their hearts.
Please tell us about Knight Illusions.
We have been astounding audiences with our unique and engaging style of illusion for over a decade. We get the audience involved right from the start so they are part of the magic, making the event even more memorable. Our side-splitting comedy will have the audience laughing out loud, and the magic will leave them in awe and wonder.
Employing a modern flair, sprinkled with classic techniques, combined with our infectious charm and sparkling personalities, our husband and wife tandem have become the entertainers of choice for those who want to give their audience unforgettable amazement, wonder, and utter joy.
David & Kylie Knight – ILLUSIONS is a fresh and exciting show that will leave the audience spellbound and talking about the event for weeks to come.
We specialize in churches and other ministry-related events. We also do some corporate work, fundraisers, theatre shows and cruise lines.
We are most well known for our professionalism, teamwork and theatrical approach to our work.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
David: My favorite memory from childhood is just the freedom of being a kid. Exploring, learning, trying new things. The fearlessness I got to experience. Somedays I would love to go back to those times and really embrace the opportunities that lay in front of me. That is one of the reasons I love to do magic for adults especially. It gives them a brief moment to return to feeling like a child!
Kylie: One of my favorite memories from childhood is a family vacation with some friends to a beach where the sand was so soft it squeaked as you walked on it. It’s a beach in Australia (where I was born and raised), called Squeaky Beach. We had fun digging in the soft sand and riding the waves with the boogie boards. Pure happiness!
