Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lance.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from Texas A&M, I started a career in software development. And, for almost 20 years that was a fun and challenging path. I was involved in all facets of building multimillion dollar platforms for some of the largest Fortune 500 companies using the latest and greatest technologies. But, despite all that success, I began to feel limited. The entrepreneurship bug was hitting me hard.
In 2017, I reached out to a friend to start a new company, Istet Games, that would teach STEM topics to the next generation through a medium they love video games. Istet, translated from Romanian means ‘smart’, and smart games are what we aim to build. I was on a new adventure with more learning to do and infinite opportunity. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. But, getting a new company off the ground is arduous and requires excessive time in front of a computer.
L4 Woodcraft was born from my need to do something non-computer related, yet creative. I have always loved woodworking and find the process of turning a rough piece of wood into something beautiful so rewarding. We take particular pride in being Texans and believe the universal reputation of quality this state produces represents us.
As an added bonus, with L4, I get to spend time with my wife, Stephanie. She is the creative mind of the company, and I’m blessed to have this opportunity to challenge ourselves together.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
L4 Woodcraft launched just before the Christmas rush in 2018. We were fortunate to have a great number of friends and family who supported our new venture, and L4 was producing about as much custom lazy susans, cutting, and cheese boards as it could at the time.

L4 Woodcraft – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
L4 Woodcraft builds custom wood crafts from the finest materials available. We’ve done well with cheese and cutting boards, but are looking to expand into home decor a bit more.
Every piece built is handcrafted by me; and my prayer is that when you look at our products, you feel the love that went into that piece. I want your piece to be a source of pride in your home and something you want to display year round.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for L4 is defined by passion. Does each piece inspire the next? I’ll consider myself successful if 100% of the products that leave my door are received with as much love and pride as was put into each piece.
