Today we’d like to introduce you to David Mann Jr.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I feel in love with music at a young age while seeing my parents perform on stage with Kirk Franklin and the Family . Seeing my parents travel and sing and sell out these different venues that encouraged my love for music and to travel. My dad, David Mann, Sr created Tillymann Music in 2002, an independent record label. His first artist was my mother, gospel singer, Tamela Mann. Working under my dad for years, I learned the business and gained an inside scoop on how the music business works. Present day, I am now the Vice President of the company and we are looking for the hottest acts of today. I love music so much, it encouraged me to pursue Djing. I currently DJ on the side from working with the label. I have been on three nationwide tours, and have performed for celebrities and people most memorable moments.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been easy. Tillymann Music is ran as a family business. We have our entire tribe working day and night to make the business successful. We have hiccups and we may fight, but at the end of the day, it makes us stronger and our bond closer. Sometimes while DJing, I struggle with stepping into my own light aside from the family business. But then I realize in order to be great, I have to build a name on my own and not solely be attached to the family business.
Please tell us about what you do.
I am an entertainer, I bring joy and light to peoples greatest moments. I am known for being a comedic DJ. I not only just keep the party going with the latest hits, but I throw in a mini stand up comedy show too. I enjoy interacting with the crowd. I will make sure you are not only dancing and having a great time but you will also get a good laugh with me too.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I enjoyed playing football. Being that I am now older, these limbs aren’t the same, so I can’t always run up and down a football field and play a game of catch without having to soak in some Epson salt later in the night.
