Today we’d like to introduce you to David Michael and Bryan Kahlig.
David and Bryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The idea came between two friends at a Roughriders baseball game. From there, one wintery-weekend, we brought our spouses into the idea over a campfire at Lake Ray Roberts. We have enjoyed combining two different viewpoints and life-experiences but always have shared a commitment to morality in everything we attempt.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have been very fortunate to have aligned with great people in an area of the metroplex that is booming. There is great camping on Lake Ray Roberts and all around the area to our north. We have seen operational struggles – how do we ensure a camper is prepared after each rental to be clean, working, and fully “stocked” for each customer, even with only a few hours turn around. We have been able to pull from our past experiences and collaborate as a group to find workable solutions that ensure our customers get a safe, clean and stocked camper every time.
Like many, the effects of the outbreak of COVID-19 deeply impacted our business. Thankfully, we have found a way to continue to supply the chance for families to “get away” in the midst of the craziness and stress of our country’s suffering while still maintaining a clean and safe environment for renters and our employees.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 380 RV Rentals story. Tell us more about the business.
We formed our business as a way to share the camping experience with others. As people who have camped our whole lives, it has been a part of us both from the start. As technology and the popularity of RV camping has increased, more and more people have the opportunity to experience the outdoors while not leaving much behind in terms of amenities. We specialize in the first time camper-towing driver and the first time camper. We have custom-tailored a guide book for each RV rental unit and also provide YouTube videos to help future and current renters.
We are very proud of putting the customer first. We realize that vacation and get-away planning has complexities in itself and we do everything we can to limit those complexities with the rental process. We respond to questions quickly, we are as flexible with pick up and drop off times, locations and dates as we can; in fact, we once delivered a camper free of charge to a customer’s workplace because they were working late and we wanted to save them the time driving so they could get on their way. We provide a 24-hour number for current campers in need of assistance and have answered calls at all hours of the late-night and early morning.
Additionally, we are looking to continue to expand our fleet through cooperation with current RV owners. We will rent out their RV unit and, in turn, pay them a monthly installment that will likely completely cover their monthly expenses as well as pay them an amount above and beyond (a “return on investment”) and the customer still continues to use their unit for their camping wants!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe that the industry will experience a large explosion as a result of a confluence of the growing popularity of “glamping” and the lockdowns experienced from the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, there will be some downstream effects of the sudden explosion in RV popularity such as campground growth/expansions, RV storage lot growth, RV maintenance needs and growth and hopefully further technological developments of materials used in the RV construction process.
