Today we’d like to introduce you to Davis Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Davis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Davis-Edward Edmonson Smith ll from Missouri Cty, Texas. a senior attending Prairie View A&M University majoring in Mass Communication with a minor in Marketing. I have a passion for anything artistic whether it is Film, Photography, Music, etc. I always find myself trying new things and always learning. I can thank my family and friends for that. A lot of what I have is because of them actually. I have family all across the country, so seeing how people live around the country has helped my perspective on how good I have it back home. I think that’s the main reason I’m as humble as I am now.
My mother instilled that me from an early age, and that’s something that I still carry with me to this day. They keep me sane, help me out in times of need, and are really there for me. Nowadays it feels like there are a lot of people who don’t have the same support system as I have, so I’m grateful for everyone in my life. When its all said and done, I want to be known as someone who cared for his community and was an overall good-hearted person, and the greatest lol. But I’m truly passionate about helping those around me and the younger ones. I’ve seen both sides of the track so I understand where people from coming from.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not even close, There are plenty of times where I want to give up and quit on my dreams because they can seem so far out at times. But I know if I was to give up now then all the time and effort I’ve put in would be wasted. I used to struggle with believing and trusting in myself. Which would hold me back from breaking out of my shell and asking for help. I probably missed out on more opportunities because of being fearful. Now I have no choice but to believe in myself and goals otherwise no one will.
I think my self-confidence grew over time just by building my relationship with God and watching everything I pray for happening. Prayer has definitely taught me patience. I’ve learned that everything happens on his time. Every time I’ve felt like I was ready for something or the time was now, God would show me reasons why it wasn’t then when I would least expect it the same blessing would approach me in a bigger way. For that, I can’t thank him enough. Now it’s about doing my part, and making my relationship with him even stronger.
Tell us more about your work.
I view myself as a brand alone. So I have to be a lot more aware of what I put out into the world. Early on, It was challenging learning how to market myself and my work, but thankful I was able to receive some great advice from George Jeff, whos Ella Mai’s videographer and photographer. I am a videographer/photographer, writer, director, I’ve started to dabble into graphic design, and producing as well. I like to be involved with everything, so I don’t think I specialize in just one area.
I believe the more you can learn, the more your able to offer and give to the world. Right now, I’m mostly known as the “sports guy”. But hopefully, with the upcoming projects that I’m working on, people will be able to see me as much more. I don’t like being put in a box, but I get it. Everything people have seen from me has been sports-related. But this fall and 2020, I’m changing that narrative, it’s gonna be pretty hard stop slow me down and stop me now. What I’m most proud of me as a brand, is being able to learn from others and applying it to my work. This year, I’ve really been stepping out of my comfort zone and going after what I prayed for.
To see the results after putting in the work is a good feeling, so I’ve been just trying to keep the momentum going and keep leveling up. I think what seta me apart from others is my ability to learn and try new things, while not being afraid to fail. There’s no limit to what we can learn, and the more we learn the more we’re able to apply to our lives and be great as we can be.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think what has helped me is to always remain humble, be a good person and just put in the work. That all started growing up, seeing my mother work for everything she has now and always staying on me. I was able to watch and learn from her that nothing in this world will be given to you, so you have to go out there ad take it. I think I’m finally getting the grasp of that, this year alone I’ve accomplished more than my 20 years combined. That also applies to be a genuine person, its nothing something you can fake, cause people can see right through.
I try to make sure that anyone I surround myself with is ok and that there on top of their stuff. I think that plays a big part in why I’m in the [position I am now, because of my friends. We all have big goals and aspirations so we make sure that we’re doing whatever it takes to get there. That’s why I mentioned putting in the work. Even with all the things I’ve done this year, I still feel like I can go even harder. Especially watching and talking to my friends, like EZM, I’ve learned that there’s no such things as putting in too much work. Kendrick said it best ” A dream is only a dream if work doesn’t follow it”. So I try to apply that quote to my life and make sure I’m doing my part, and leave the rest in God’s hands.
