Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAndre Felton.
DeAndre, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved around a lot as a kid born in Rockford Illinois till I was 6 years old. Then I moved to Columbus Ohio till I was 12 years old my mom was really doing the best she can with 2 boys and being a single mother, so we don’t really blame her for anything just wish I got to grow up somewhere and call it home. I then moved to Chicago/ Schaumburg Illinois a suburb and stayed there till sophomore year and graduated high school from Dr. John Horn High School. Music was always a passion I wanted to explore being younger and having so much access to different genres caused me to be curious I wanted to know why it made people feel the way they did when they listened to it how it captivated everyone. I’ve been doing it for about 5 years and although the sounds and styles have changed the roots could never. I believe I’ll be a big change for music when I step in the game certainly, I won’t stop until I have a positive impact on our community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles me and my mom’s relationship struggles kicking me out a total of 6 times maybe 7 the first couple times sending me to my grandma’s and the second to last time was probably the worst because I ended up in a bad place and almost gave up on life really changed my views on the world I tried to remain positive getting robbed by people I knew and All that meeting a woman who pretty much saved me from doing something I’d regret. The last time was also bad I slept outside for a night and got real musty just stuff a kidd shouldn’t have to face caused me to grow up quickly wish black boys and girls had a stronger family dynamic because believe it or not a lot of kids have went through this in their lifetime (found that out in high school) and my eyes just really were opened. my best friend was murdered by another person (Used to be friends) we grew up all together in Illinois so for things to play out how they did and for life to be the way it is now… I have a child a beautiful girl I’m welcoming in, and he doesn’t get to witness it. I make sure he lives on in our hearts.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make music. I’m a musician who’s melodic, lyrical, really whatever you want I can do depending on the day I’m having. I’d like to consider myself a Picasso of music making I really find joy in it and it makes me so happy doing it I feel like a kid in a candy store I’m only 18 and there’s so much art that goes into music it’s so beautiful how it can bring people together have you made a song and then 10 minutes later your friends and you are all singing it or rapping it together in the car let what about people you don’t even know it’s that craziest thing ever. I think what sets me apart is that I’m really limitless when it comes to music; I’ve absorbed so much of it that my potential literally starts in the clouds.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say doing your own thing out of the norms but still staying along the lines… For instance, make that crazy song or do that crazy adlib finish the song make your video have fun in it but artist forget that marketing and promotion aspect of things and that it costs.
