Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Anthony Vaughan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us De’Anthony. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hello! My name is De’Anthony Vaughan and I am from Kansas City, Missouri. I was introduced to dance at the age of three by grandmother who was also a dancer. She had her own studio where I started tap and acrobatics. As I’ve gotten older, I decided to further my training so I attended Ailey Camp Kansas City and right after studied at the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey. At the same time, I also attended the Kansas City Ballet School as a scholarship student. After I graduated high school, I knew I didn’t want to go to college so I went to New York and attended the Ailey Summer intensive. At the end of the intensive I received a full scholarship to study during the year in the Scholarship Program where I started my journey at The Ailey School. Spending 3 years of intense training I auditioned for multiple companies and received a contract with Dance Black Dance Theatre. I am currently finishing my sixth season and getting ready to start my seventh season with company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been very challenging. Being a dancer is not only physically but mentally hard at times. There were days where I wanted to give up and especially hearing the word no sometimes can really bring you down but my love and passion for dance kept me going. Dancing is what I love to do and can’t see myself without it.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a company member with Dance Black Dance Theatre. I am also a teacher and choreographer for the Dallas Black Dance Academy and many schools around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I am most proud of the growth not only as an artist but the man I have become over the years. Also being able to share my gift on so many stages and use my artistic voice through dance.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Favorite Child hood memory has to be me performing and winning my school talent show in elementary school. I performed Sammie I like it and had 2 of my friends as back up dancers. Good times.
