Meet Deavon Moore of DLM Supply in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deavon Moore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Deavon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A small number of people know from the age of two what they want to do in life. And an even smaller number actually do it.

Looking back over 50 years, my lineage was prophetic. My great grandmother worked in a woman’s store, my great aunt owned a women’s clothing store, and my grandmother owned her own apparel store in Oklahoma City. Retail was, and still is, in my blood. As a child, I would dream of styling outfits, study fashion magazines, and create my own pieces with linens from my mother’s closet.

Later, I pursued fashion merchandising in college which led me to opportunities learning from some of the most well-known international brands. Starting as an intern and climbing to VP of merchandising, I spent 15+ years cultivating relationships and knowledge from the best in the industry.

I found my niche in menswear through an enthusiasm for a shift in the industry. In recent years, the primary focus has been on the fit rather than a particular label or brand. The result has been an influx of innovative and successful lines that create a much more diverse range of products for men. No longer is men’s fashion uncomfortable, formal, or defined.

DLM Supply was founded in Oak Cliff as a small store with big dreams. We search for style that is cozy, distinctive, and complimentary to each client. We can outfit your apparel, accessory, grooming and/or footwear needs with a carefully curated collection of brands. We embody the spirit of small business with global influence and look forward to sharing our experience with you.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I find retail in general to be challenging a lot of the time. I have added pressure with it being a start-up and men’s store as well. When you open in a location you have to have some time to get to know your customers, what they gravitate towards, and sizing is key. I find myself working on these obstacles daily to get exactly what the customer is looking for.

Overall, I have found the first nine months to be going smoothly. It helps when you love what you do!

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DLM Supply story. Tell us more about the business.
DLM Supply is a specialty men’s store I like to say a one stop shop for a man. I carry everything from grooming, underwear, footwear, accessories and apparel. I also have really unique women’s accessories (a little something for her).

I do all the buying for the store. I do research on every brand I bring into the store.

I feel the design and flow of the store is what sets me apart. All my fixtures were custom built in the neighborhood. I have a unique look that has become a lot of the reason people stop in the store.

I am most proud of what I have accomplished since opening the store 9 months ago.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think it’s a little bit of luck and passion! I have wanted a store since I can ever remember. I wasn’t getting younger and if I wanted a store it needed to be now. From the start of my business plan the cards fell in the right hands from there. I was constantly networking and it seemed that each time I met someone the stars aligned!!
