Meet Dee Dee Burington of Garland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Dee Burington.

Hi Dee Dee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was always active as child, and that carried over into my young adult years. I was involved in competitive sports like gymnastics and track and field. I was also actively involved in the dance and theatre arts. My parents put me in everything!
I remember even trying diving, but I hated always being wet and going in the water head first.
Many years later, after settling down and starting a family, I found my way back to this active lifestyle. I would use the day care at the gym and take the group fitness classes. That would give me two hours of self care time. I found myself wanting to become an instructor. It was so similar to my background in athletics and dance and I knew I could do it!
I first became AFAA certified for group fitness, and then yoga Alliance certified for yoga. I now teach Yoga, Pilates and Barre in the North Dallas area.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been easy. In 2012, I was diagnosed with breast cancer during my 200 hour yoga training. It was scary. I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction. This life event brought me event left brought me closer to yoga. I learned to use yoga to calm my mind, deepen my breath and ease anxiety. I learned that I could actually help others in a profound way through yoga. I then became certified to teach yoga for cancer through Yoga Bridge, a non profit that offers free yoga to anyone in cancer treatment. I teach for YB online on Thursday evenings at 5:30 pm. https://yogabridge.weebly.com
Giving is what helps you heal. Repeat that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for creating a flow that everyone can join and enjoy! Whether this flow be in Yoga, Pilates or Barre. These are classes that we can express ourselves through movement, . I empower others to feel strong and confident from the inside out!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I choose someone that I look up to and would like to model after. I pick the best of the best in my minds eye and study their approach to teaching without losing my own unique qualities.
