Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Hill.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been an artist since I was a young child and have a keen eye for beauty in obscure things and all kinds of people, but when I picked up a camera for a particular project working with a burlesque troupe that was cultivated locally to inspire women to work on their own esteem issues through the art of burlesque and performance and doing portrait sessions for them, I really started to curate a brand that esteems women through portraiture over a six-year period. I got to really see how that could change a woman’s perspective of herself if someone else could really see the beautiful aspects of her and reflect them back to her no matter what age, shape size or personal issue was at hand that we were working on or that she was celebrating coming through the other side of!
I am about giving women safe space to be playful, creative, step out of their everyday boundaries, have fun, be bold, try something new, step into their fantasy character, their professional role, their family life or their cherished events. It’s always an honor to capture all aspects of women and the moments of their lives that they want to keep forever. Whoever she is, I always have a way of creating a comfortable experience to make her feel valued and beautiful. It’s not just photography, it’s an experience to capture a moment in time that will be immortal. I have a team of women who also work with me to create an experience or a one on one personal session for the client. Sometimes, we do weddings, private boudoir parties or I have themed events that appeal to that inner play collectively for a group of women, and other times, I consult to create a private personal experience based on things she may want to explore and capture of the woman she is on the inside. The portrait sessions I offer have a magical way of manifesting in real life when one acts “as if” and then next thing you know, she becomes this woman she visualized! Inside of every woman is many women and they are all beautiful and powerful.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road actually, I think when you love what you do, you always become more by way of being fully present in your work! There is nothing more satisfying than creating art for a client and them being so happy with the work, it’s the best feeling in the world and such a win-win!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dee Hill Photography – what should we know?
I’m pretty specific in my work being focused on women and their projects, I have other friends who do lots of work with infants and pets and varied subjects or events, so I will usually refer clients out to them, I stay pretty close to what I feel like I’m best at.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Lisa Carmen who curated the Burlesque Experience, we worked with at least 300 women for that project that she life coached over the course of six years and that experience was intensely beautiful. My makeup artist Vivienne Vermuth who does all my hair and makeup for me, even though I am a working hairstylist in Addison as well, I prefer that she does the hair and makeup for most of my shoots when she is available for them, and Zenda L’ Morrigan who does a lot of our styling and assist for group sessions of women.
