Meet Deitra Butler of Lush Couture Floral in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deitra Butler.

Deitra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I developed a love for flowers when I was a little girl working in the garden with my grandmother. She took so much pride in her bearded iris plants, rose bushes, lilies and caladiums. Her love for them rubbed off on me. I was the kid that always wanted a plant instead of a toy when I went to the store with my mom. I started to work in a small flower shop in Marina Del Rey, Ca while I was in college. I realized that I had a natural knack for floral design that I hadn’t discovered before. The more I worked with them the more I loved them. Flowers kind of get in your blood. Most people in the floral business will tell you that. Once they get in your blood you can never really get away from them. I moved back to Texas to finish my college degree at TCU in Interior Design. I worked as a designer for six years but really missed flowers. I had to take the plunge and go for it. I knew I wanted to design floral for weddings and events. After taking several years to prepare for opening my own business, I did just that! In April of 2018, I celebrated my tenth year in business! The last ten years have been such a blessing from God. I give Him all of the credit for my abilities and the business He has given me. I have come to know some incredible people (brides and vendors) that I will call friends for life. I’m so grateful and honored to be a part of a couple’s wedding day.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of the fun things about what I do is that I’m constantly learning something new. It seems like each event teaches me something. I love that about this industry. Things are always changing and evolving. I try to keep growing as a designer and a business owner.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lush Couture Floral – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I started Lush a little over ten years ago. I think my background in interior design definitely affects the way I approach floral design. Because of this when I design, I’m thinking about things like texture, rhythm, balance, harmony, color, light, shape, space, form, etc. All of those elements and principles of design that were ingrained in me in my interior design classes at TCU. I also received a minor degree in lighting. So, I understand how lighting can make or break an event. I would rather brides spend less money on flowers and light them than blow their budget on floral and not have the money to light them.

Ultimately, I hope that my love of flowers rubs off on my clients! They can really make an event memorable. I always want my clients (usually brides) to be blown away when they see their reception, ceremony and bouquets. If they walk into the reception for the first time before all of their guests see it and cry from happiness then my job is done. Nothing makes me happier, honestly. It thrills me to know that my brides are overjoyed with how their flowers turned out. It’s why I do what I do.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Something I love about working in the wedding industry in DFW is the diversity of venues. There is something for every couple out there. I have worked at over 100 different venues and still have not been to all of them.
