Meet Deja Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Brown.

Hi Deja, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, art has always been a massive part of my life! I didn’t know I could do art full-time until high school when I took a graphic design course at a community college nearby and found my true passion. I got my first design client (creating a logo) when I was only 15; I know now how bad the logo was, but at the time, there was such a bright feeling behind creating something for someone else’s business.

Fast forward to college, when I learned about the wonders of digital illustration, my creative passion changed. I had discovered a way to allow and let people into my unique world. I recognized that I got to share this with so many others. With this, I honed in on my skill and eventually found myself on a design journey that has been so rewarding and unexpected in many ways.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A creative journey is never smooth; there are so many lows, so many highs, disappointments, and sometimes, rewards that make me feel invincible to any critique someone may have. As a freelance designer, I have learned that this path is uncertain. There are risks that I have to take; I have to sacrifice the idea of stability but know that in the end, it always is worth it. I’ve learned the (very) hard way that art is subjective and that not everyone sees the world how I see it. I know it’s wild, but the everyday un-expectancy of freelancing is what keeps me going in this industry. One day I may get an email from a super cool project, I would have never expected. One day I may be told I wasn’t good enough for another project. I never know, and it can be fun!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am primarily an illustrator now. What I am known for is my way of tapping into fantastical worlds that highlight my appreciation for nostalgic foods and whimsical/quirky environments/ideas. My color pallet is bright, bold, and LOUD. My passion for color shows through in every piece I create. I am most proud of how colorful and vibrant my art is. You could spot it from a mile away!
