Today we’d like to introduce you to Delta Napolitano.
Delta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have had an entrepreneurial spirit for as long as I can remember. When I was four years old, I created my first business. My product was a pad of yellow post-it notes with hand drawn purple hearts. I sold each post-it for 25 cents, and believe it or not, I sold that entire pad! My entrepreneurial spirit continued in the fifth grade. Together with my best friend Caity, we created a fashion line and we made and sold key chains on the playground. Years later, Caity and I started a blog together in high school. Before going off to college, to help pay tuition, I started a business called “Cookies for College.”
When the time came to chose a profession, I chose to study elementary education. I thought being a teacher would fulfill my creative drive, however, after about three years of teaching, I realized that teaching was no longer a passion. I had put myself in a box. Teaching took up every minute of my time and I would create fun and fabulous decor and activities for my classroom, only to have them be unappreciated or worst destroyed at the end of the class day. Then one day an idea hit me. I’m young and have a world of possibilities! I didn’t have to stick to teaching, so I decided to leave the teaching profession and work for my family’s home inspection company. Switching jobs gave me the freedom to create and soon thereafter “The Realistic Redhead” was born! I created this blog intending to share knowledge on mental and physical wellness. My blog is about wellness in every sense of the word. I research food companies, ingredients, health trends, and other wellness practices. I like to keep it real!
Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest struggle along the way has been prioritizing the needs and wants of others before myself. In trying to please everyone and ‘fit in’, I lost my confidence and stopped dreaming. Over time I had trained myself to second guess every choice, every move, determined not to fail or let others lose faith in me. I learned not to trust myself or my instincts. By changing career paths, I proved to myself that anything is possible. I can work for a successful small family business and continue my entrepreneurial dreams. I can be a writer and create content that would help millions of people live healthier lives no matter how impossible it may feel. I can be a redhead from a small in Texas and love myself the way I am. This is something I still work at but as long as I move forward a little bit every day, I know that anything is possible.
Tell us more about the business.
The Realistic Redhead is an inspirational tool for anyone looking to love themselves a little more. My original thought was to have a blog centered around “wellness.” After doing a little research, I noticed that there are one in a million “wellness” blogs out there. I read through a few of them and realized that most of them are centered around avocado toast, a million different ways to enhance cardio, or basic clean eating techniques. I’m not a nutritionist or a dietician. What makes The Realistic Redhead different is that I’m an average girl who like millions of others have tried every diet out there and battled with “mental wellness”. I wanted to create a blog that is raw, authentic, and relatable.
The Realistic Redhead is different in that we leave sugar coating to baking recipes not info sharing. I research popular food companies and tell you the truth. What is really in that matcha latte? How does that salmon affect your body? Some of my posts are just me talking about personal challenges I am having, like “the quarter-life crisis” because I know there are others out there experiencing the same thing. I specialize in telling the truth. Sure I have some fun posts about how to be a better morning person, but my favorites are the ones when I spill the tea on companies and products that label themselves as “healthy”.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Blogging has seen a HUGE shift in the past two years and is constantly evolving. Viewers want less words and more pictures with short captions. Instagram had changed the game and coined the term “microblogging.” I think Instagram stories are going to grow even more in popularity because they are like mini vlogs and you can have all of your brands on one platform. Blogs have also become more and more niche. There are so many “bloggers” now that it is hard to be heard unless you have a specific focus. You can find a blog centered on anything!
