Meet Demarcus Young of Lit Life Records in Bishop Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demarcus Young.

Demarcus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My musical journey started out as a young teen with many ups and downs and I don’t regret it. I was only 15 when I decided to start my very own record label, but didn’t have the full vision nor the resources to do it. So like many other hungry artists, I continued to work hard and dream on. My very first talent in music was producing and mixing. I started noticing that everywhere my family and I moved to, I was always the only person who actually knew how to accomplish creating a fully mixed project. At times, I have always wondered why only specific places like Los Angeles & New York have major record labels and indie labels while Dallas once struggled to get a single foot in the big door as far as record labels go. As I grew more into music and perfecting my craft, it all started to come clear to me. After having my first child at the age of 18, I really started to take my career seriously and started to collaborate and create with other artists. Learning was an everyday action that I had to take in order to fully understand how the music industry works.

Finally, I was ready for my first project. I named it Lightyears Away. It was inspired by some of my favorite artists Kid Cudi, Z-Ro & Nipsey Hussle. The mixtape actually did pretty well for a noob starting off with only self-promotion. I was always stage-ready since I was in middle school. I’ve performed in various places around Dallas like Green Door Public House, The 27th Kwanzaa Fest, Bar Louie & other places around the city. Day by day my intentions for starting a record label grew quickly and I had to start somewhere. So I decided to startup online and see how far it will go. and so far it’s doing very well. We get constant emails and direct messages from artists asking to be signed and that was the main goal. To bring Dallas a home-based indie label that everyone knows about and can depend on. So this is now where I am, an upcoming artist like any other but I carry a passion for what I do. I won’t sleep until my entire vision comes to life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to success was never a smooth trip. I have met many artists with little to no vision and those who were always absent. These things showed me to only provide an opportunity for those who are actually starving for a change in their musical careers. My struggles were mainly investing in artists who were simply not worth it. I love to learn, so the difficult challenges were always something I loved to have come across. I believe that if you love your struggle, you will love your success unconditionally.
