Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Turner.
Derrick, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born at Parkland Memorial Hospital in 1982; I attended Phyllis Wheatley, Charles Rice, Robert T. Hill, and Lincoln High School. I’ve always loved music since my Mama bought me Smooth Criminal by Micheal Jackson, but I think I fell deeper in love in 1996 when I joined the marching band at Lincoln High School. I went to Texas A&M Commerce for a few years, moved to Seattle, Washington and came back to Dallas where I’ve been on and off of the music scene for about 13years. Out of my need for media and visuals, I created a media company called Cool Coalition Media in 2013, but music has always been my first love, and as of 2019 I’ve recommitted fully to music.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create music that talks about relationships and average people’s emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Relationships are my main lane so to speak. It come’s naturally to rap or write about them because it’s from a real place, it’s what I know. But I consider myself versatile. My message is to be comfortable with your feelings, especially as a male. Some of the topics I discuss display male vulnerability in a society that’s saturated with misogyny and degradation. Society often time teaches men to mask their feelings on the contrary I express and articulate mine well. I hope people can relate to my music and it makes them feel. People should know I’m releasing a lot of music this year. I’ve held back previous years from being somewhat a perfectionist, but I’ve learned that some of the best art is received so well because of its imperfections.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Be open to collaborate. Take yourself seriously. Explore your craft. Listen to other genres of music. Support your city like you want to be supported.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
