Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Vandeput.
Destiny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been involved in digital marketing in some capacity since 2005. There weren’t “social media” courses in college at the time, so I was that person at my first job saying, “So there’s this thing called Twitter and we need to be on it.” I’ve always been in awe of the power of words and have been an early adapter of all the different social media platforms, so helping brands communicate digitally feels very natural. Throughout my full-time jobs, I’ve always freelanced as a digital marketing strategist and in early 2019, I decided to take the risk to jump off into creating my own company and doing it full time.
It’s been an incredible experience and I’ve been very lucky to have quickly secured some fantastic clients that keep me busy and keep life interesting and diverse!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth the entire time, by any means. Most of my struggles came at the beginning when I was switching from my previous role which was more of managing digital marketing efforts at a large non-profit to then being back in the weeds, creating content, communicating with clients, scheduling, etc. The nitty-gritty was quite overwhelming to keep up with and I lost a great client that I wouldn’t have now because I just didn’t have the processes in place that really needed to be there to keep everything organized. But I’ve gone on to gain and maintain some incredible clients (most of which have been with me since the first few months) and it’s been a blast strategizing and traveling and meeting new people and learning new industries.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DJV Marketing – what should we know?
DJV Marketing is a digital marketing company that specializes in social media management and digital advertising. We work with a variety of companies and organizations to help them define who they need to be speaking to about their product/mission and then help them find and then communicate to those people. We at DJV Marketing are incredibly privileged to help companies achieve their goals. Whether it’s small companies launching their first advertising campaigns all the way to when we produced the social feed for an Amazon music festival, DJV Marketing gives it our all.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
You can’t be afraid to fail. If you have a great idea for a campaign, go for it because you can always course correct! Anyone who has worked for me will tell you that when they come to me with an idea, I’ll say, “Let’s test it!” The great thing about digital marketing is we can test and pivot very rapidly, so you can’t be afraid to try something new. If it works, great! If it bombs, pivot.
I also think consistent re-evaluation is what brings about innovation. It’s in the little things like changing color schemes, presets, messaging, etc. Then it’s also in the big things by reimagining campaigns and evaluating target audiences. Just because something is working now doesn’t mean it will be working in 2 months, so you have to stay ahead of the trends.
