Meet Devin David

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin David.

Devin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
If you asked me where would I be, or what I wanted to do in my first 20 years, I never thought I would say makeup. As a Dallas native, I grew up having a passion for creating beautiful things. Whether that be playing in my mother’s hair or drawing the badass female characters from my favorite cartoons, I was all about it. I spent a lot of time with my mom and grandmother, and as it begins for many little boys who grow to be makeup artists, I was mesmerized with seeing the women in my life beautify themselves into these strong and vibrant energies. Of course, I didn’t tell a lipstick from a mascara, but I was certain that I that I loved what it could do.

In 2015, After graduating I set my sights on moving to Denton to pursue Design at UNT. I’m sure by that time I’d found out that if I wanted to be a conventional artist, I wouldn’t be making much so the next best thing as a Graphic Designer would have to do. That year has to be one of the most exciting of my life. Makeup came before my homework 80% of the time, and my friends became the canvas of choice. Five years later that little hobby has become my career, and I give to my clients that same vibrant energy that I saw the women in my life create for themselves.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I always had an idea that it wouldn’t be easy when I first started. Working in the beauty industry can be extremely challenging. You have to think on your feet, and as a makeup artist be exactly what we are: a servicer. Sometimes that involves making sure client’s needs met through any and every detail. The most jarring thing that I’ve ever run into is someone who was uncomfortable with me doing her makeup because of who I am, black and gay. Never, will I let something like that deter me. I want kid that look like me to see someone like me and know that they can do ANYTHING.

Devin David Artistry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a makeup artist that specializes in clean beauty work. I’m also an Esthetician so I provide advice and expertise on how to care for your skin.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is ongoing and never static. I want to learn everything I can learn, and truly be great at what I do. Of course, you can’t be great at everything, but you can definitely give your all. To me, that is what success is about. As long as you maintain that fire, and never stop questioning how can I be better, success will manifest for you.
