Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Smalls and Ni’Asia Smalls.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We met mid-2013 and came across a camera in 2014. Prior to getting a camera, we would always share stories about our interest of art and how we wanted to start a creative agency as our long term goal. Our goal to touch on real-life experiences through art. Love, pain, growth, death, etc… but in a creative manner. We’ve made appearances in seminars, books, and spoke at a few churches. We also dapple with fashion and public health now as well. Our goal is to bring awareness to society in the most exciting and creative way possible.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing has been smooth about our journey because of life obstacles, being new to Texas coming from Charleston, SC and raising a one-year-old without much family support because of distance. But we use what we’re encountering to challenge our inner artistic selves and target our emotions and the emotions of others.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SmallHaze story. Tell us more about the business.
We like to look at our brand as a jack of all trades because we don’t just do photography although we started as a “photography” company. We like to look at our brand as a creative agency. We deal with all forms of art. We even act as the “middle man” to help other brands and services collaborate if we’re unable to offer those services in particular. We do photography/videography, fashion design, fitness, and website design. We’re most proud of the fact that we’re actually able to touch lives of people who are going through some of the same issues we’ve encountered and helped them tell their stories through our body of work.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’re not too fond of the word “luck” but we’ve had our fair share of blessings while working in this business. We’ve been able to meet a variety of new people, travel places we never thought we would go, speak at events we only dreamt about and do all of this while maintaining a healthy bond with our family and friends. We have lots of work to do to get to where we would like to get to but for right now we’re just embracing the process and taking the good and bad for what it is and capitalizing on the opportunity.
