Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Handley.
Devon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have loved weddings ever since I was a little girl. I was the one who was constantly planning her wedding, and her friends’ weddings, and her Barbie’s weddings. When my friends and I got old enough that weddings were a potential reality, I continued to plan all of our weddings, adjusting them to the adults we now were, and making some of them a reality. After planning my own wedding as well as a few of my friends, I was at a point in my school career where I felt I was just going through the motions, poorly I might add, and I knew I needed to reevaluate my dreams to really figure out what I wanted to do. The one dream that was always there, was planning weddings.
One of my best friends got engaged and asked me to help her plan her wedding, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to start my business.
After walking through Canton Trade Days with one of my good friends and bouncing ideas off of each other on where different things we saw could go in a wedding, I asked her to be my assistant and she said yes! So from there, we started Southern Housewives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think that any company starts off and is immediately a hit, although there are probably some exceptions, however, we are not one of those. It hasn’t necessarily been a rough road, but we have definitely had a slow start.
Please tell us about Southern Housewives Planning and Events .
We enjoy making the dreams of brides and grooms a reality; although we tend to do more “rustic” or “rustic chic” weddings, we aren’t one trick ponies, we can do everything from super elegant to a boho backyard wedding; I am definitely proud of myself for trying to follow a childhood dream, I strive to keep family and faith in the forefront of how things are run; I think what sets us apart is that every wedding package includes 2 planners, we’ve found that having 2 of us ensures that the wedding flows as flawlessly as it possibly can.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think there is anything I would’ve done differently, I have built some great relationships with brides and vendors alike. I might not yet have as many clients as I would like, but I’m just starting out.
