Today we’d like to introduce you to Devyn Walker.
Devyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everyone has a turning point in their life and my turning point happened in 2011. During the summer of 2011, I lost my father made the unfortunate decision to take his own life and I was the person that found him afterwards. After experiencing that trauma, I was clinically diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The following years up until 2014 was a struggle for me, I even attempted to take my own life. It’s interesting to think that I found my passion and purpose during the lowest moments of my life but due to this trauma I was introduced to therapy and my therapist later introduced me to yoga. Through that and along with other things, I learned how to healthily cope with my mental diagnoses without medication. I was always interested in psychology and behavioral science but my experience with therapy pushed me to get a bachelors degree in psychology, earning my yoga teacher certification, and obtaining my masters in counseling. Due to my experience, it became my personal mission to help others heal from their traumas.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road building my own brand. I would be lying if I said my own personal traumas doesn’t affect me today because it still do. Although the symptoms from my diagnoses are not as severe anymore they do still exist. Sometimes, I have moments where I’m sad or anxious and in those moments it is difficult to help others. So, I always have to be very self-aware to be sure that I am not projecting any of that on the individuals that I pour into through my brand.
Sent From Devyn – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well, I wouldn’t necessarily consider what I do a business (yet) but I would consider it a brand. My brand name is ‘Sent From Devyn’ and it consists of everything relating to wellness. My brand’s mission is to help others heal the best way fitting for them. Through my brand, I provide a variety of coping skills including yoga, encouragement, and provide education regarding mental health. I am proud that the information I provide to others actually helps. I think my skillset sets me apart from the norm because you don’t run into many counselors that are yoga teachers as well. I aim to include the whole body in my therapy to make that mind-body connection.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am very proud that I became a registered yoga teacher and certified rehabilitation counselor despite my diagnoses. I am currently obtaining hours to become a licensed professional counselor to start my own private practice and I anticipate that will be my next proudest moment.
