Today we’d like to introduce you to Dezaree’ Lusk.
Dezaree’ Lusk is a 26-year-old Licensed Master of Social Worker, Licensed Cosmetologist, Certified Permanent Makeup Artist and Certified Hair Loss Specialist. She entered in the beauty industry at Duncanville High School and received her cosmetology license once she completed her high school diploma. Summer 2011 she became a Licensed Cosmetologist before entering Prairie View A & M University. At Prairie View, Dezaree’ was a PVAMU cheerleader, a part of the Social Work Action Club, member of the Eta Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and studied abroad to Ghana in West Africa. Throughout college, she continued to do hair for her peers. Dezaree’ graduated with a Bachelor’s in Social Work and completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a specialization in Health & Behavioral Health from the University of Houston. At the University of Houston, she was a GLOBE Fellow and studied abroad to London and Swansea, Wales. Throughout her schooling, she continued to style hair and research ways that she could combine her two true passions: Social Work and Cosmetology. At the age of 23, Dezaree’ launched her company Divine Hair Co, now known as Divine Beauty Bar, LLC.
Has it been a smooth road?
Owning your own business is not easy; however, with prayer, faith, and a good support system, you will succeed. I believe that if you go into business with the right mind and passion, your business will prosper. One thing I have always told myself was to not allow anyone to move me faster than what I was moving. It is not a race! I have always prayed and asked God to lead the way. I was fortunate enough to use my finances from being a Social Worker to help build my business; however, there were times when I felt things were moving too slow. I reminded myself that I have to trust the process and remember why the company was started! It does get frustrating at times because I do not have anyone to assist in the decision-making process and I’m not always sure if I made the best decision. I created my own website, www.divinebeautybar.com, and I am the only owner of my company. I am 100% involved in my company and it has created a trust between my clients and I. Anyone who calls or emails Divine Beauty Bar feel confident in my services because I am very knowledgeable and confident in the services, trainings, and products that I sell. Furthermore, I am now stepping out of my comfort zone and have found the right mentor that pushes me and my company to new heights.
My advice to anyone in business or starting a business is to keep pushing and learn from each trial. Work smart, not hard and definitely do not knock your day job. Use that financial source to help you fund your dream until you can be completely on your own. Never stop learning and open your mind to new things, ideas, books, networking events, and more. Lastly, you know your vision and do not forget it! Do not let anyone deter you from your dream. Find what sets you apart from everyone and do not let up! If you keep pushing, trusting, and crossing at least one thing off your to-do list a day, you will see results quicker than you think!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Divine Beauty Bar – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am mostly proud of my company for not being stagnant and moving with the latest trends that align with my company’s mission and services needed. Divine Beauty Bar accepts insurance for individuals with hair loss (Alopecia). She is a provider for BlueCross Blue Shield, United Healthcare and a vendor for the Veteran Affairs Hospital. Individuals with a diagnosis of Alopecia may be covered for a Cranial “Wig” Prosthesis depending on their insurance plan. Veterans are also covered for a hair prosthesis by their VA benefits. In addition to providing hair loss services, she became a Certified Permanent Makeup Artist specializing in Microblading/3D Brows, Microshading/Powder Brows, Areola Restoration (for Masectomy patients), Scar Camouflage, Permanent Eyeliner, and Full Lip Color to better serve her unique clientele. Permanent Makeup is semi-permanent and has the ability to last up to three years with proper care. Annual retouches are recommended. As a mental health provider, Permanent Makeup Artist and Cosmetologist, she now offers courses in Permanent Makeup to teach others how to combat Alopecia, Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) and more through beauty enhancement techniques.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about Dallas! No matter how far I go in life, I will always remember home. I was born and raised in Oakcliff and those life lessons has helped mode me into the woman that I am today. My community, my church, and family, has made great contributions to the success of me and my company. I was taught to “be more than a product of your environment” by my mother. My church, Friendship West Baptist Church, has created West Wall Street just as Black Wall Street, which allows businesses to showcase and promote their company within the church. I am thankful to know that I have the support of my family and church family as I continue to pursue a life of entrepreneurship.
