Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Roehl.
Diana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The company I worked for had an in-house gym run by the YMCA where I taught aerobics on my lunch break and after work. I had just attended a training where I was taught that abdominal crunches were most effective for only 15 minutes when they asked me to teach a 30 minute abdominal class. I asked about this in light of this new information we were just taught, I was advised to do 15 minutes of abs and 15 minutes of stretching.
As I researched stretching, all information lead to yoga. And that’s when my journey began. That 15 minutes of “stretching” changed my life!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Teaching and practicing yoga has always been the easy part, the business side is where I have had the most challenges. When I first started, I had a very limited schedule and was the only teacher. There was one summer where I had basically only had one student! Luckily, my landlord only charged me a small amount of rent until I could build my clientele up. I continue to work on ways to keep my schedule and studio relevant, productive and fun!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have run my own yoga studio for 16 years.
What I am most proud of is that we teach yoga that suits Every Body. We don’t believe there is a yoga body type. What we do is make sure that every posture we teach is made assessable by offering options that might modify or advance those postures as needed.
Through this system, what has developed is a safe and nurturing environment where people can grow and develop at the rate that is most beneficial for each individual student.
We also offer a wide variety and styles of yoga and yoga influenced classes such as Pilates, Thai Yoga Bodywork, workshops, master classes and retreats.
I have been trained in Viniyoga, (also called the yoga of adaptation), which I believe sets me and my studio apart. This is where I learned the importance of observation, watching how each student moves through each posture, and how, based on this information to utilize different options that allows each person to achieve their personal best.
What were you like growing up?
I was always a curious and imaginative child. I taught myself to read by looking through the encyclopedias we had at home before I went to kindergarten. I loved to draw, color and later on painting.
