Today we’d like to introduce you to Digvi DeSevo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It’s pretty simple. I love it. Everything about it. The uncertainty of it, the way it expresses who you are without effort, the ability to share it with others; art to me is just who I am. I was a doodler. Never really good at academics. I’d be covering my notebooks in doodles rather than notes. It was therapeutic for me, an out from my everyday life. Being a teenager is hard enough but being a teenager to immigrant parents in this country is even harder. Art was just my thing. It allowed me to be who I was without the influence of any one person or any one thing.
I take pride in being who I am. I am not perfect, but I am happy. And through the years working through my Art has made me happier and more complete.
I majored in Art but quickly changed to psychology; wanted to make sure I could provide for a family that I one day wanted. I did small stuff here and there for myself or my family, but it wasn’t until my husband said just try and sell and see. So I now display/sell my work in uptown Dallas via Dear Clark Hair Salon. I have an Etsy page, and I’m about to do my second art show ever via Conception Art show at the Community Brewery. I am very much so in the early stages of a career of any kind, but I am looking forward too seeing where all this leads me.
My long term goals are not to be in some fancy gallery (even though that would be cool), or to sell as much of my work no matter the value. My long term goal is to share my art with as many people as possible. The one thing that satisfies me the most is not in my work itself but when a person feels so connected with a piece that they just have to have it. To know that I was able to spark an emotion whether it be happy, sad, pain, or peace, the point is is that I made them that much more aware of who they are and they take it home with them and fill their home with this piece, this emotion. That is just so unbelievably satisfying to me. Of course, the business aspect in itself is cool too but to know that I have my art, this emotion that this person felt to be so important to be displayed in their home is unbelievably the best part.
Please tell us about your art.
I mainly work with acrylic. I do a lot of pour painting, but I also work with textures, i.e. glass beads, stucco texture, heavy gel, etc. to create textured art. I do pour art on canvas but then started to do it to make functional art. I do acrylic pours on acacia wood serving trays, lazy susans, and coasters. Functional and it’s a unique piece. I also make holiday ornaments from resin.
I enjoy making my art, but importantly I love sharing it. I love that people want to display it and be a part of it.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think the hardest thing I come across is getting my art out there. Social media helps a lot, but art is tricky. I feel that unless you see it in person, it’s hard for someone to fall in love with it. Not everyone is so fortunate to have their work displayed at a gallery. So my advice would be to start somewhere small like coffee shops, stores, or salons. And most importantly be patient. Art is one of those things where the stars have to align for the right person in the right place in the right mood.
The one lesson I wish I learned earlier which I have a feeling is going to be an ongoing learning experience is balancing my art and my family. Fining the time and getting into the mindset and staying int he mindset is difficult.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a lot of my work displayed at Dear Clark Hair Salon in Uptown Dallas. They support local artists and what else do you do besides stare at the walls while you’re getting your hair done. It’s brilliant. I also have an Etsy page – ArtByDig, and I also post a lot on my Instagram account – ArtBydig.
