Meet Dixie Dixon of Dixie Dixon Productions in DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dixie Dixon.

Dixie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
You might say that I live my life in transit! 😉 I’m a traveling nomad, a road warrior of sorts and sometimes I feel more at home on American Airlines seat 10c than anywhere else. When I decided to become a commercial advertising photographer and director, I had no idea how hard it would be, but I had an internal knowing that it would be worth it. This is my souls calling and I am thankful to get to make pictures day in, day out!! I’ve had every job in the photography industry that you can imagine from shooting Little League team photos to my high school yearbook to studying fashion photography abroad in London with a world-renowned fashion photographer- that is when I fell in love with Fashion photography!! My first commercial gig was shooting for a TV show on AXS television called, “Get Out,” and I think the biggest highlight so far is becoming a Nikon Ambassador of the United States!! It has been one crazy fun adventure!!! The part I love most about my job is getting to work with my Dream Team, I call them the dream team because they’re some of my best friends who I also get the rare opportunity to work within this creative industry. It sure makes the productions fun!!! 🙂

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha, there is no smooth road in life, it is bumpy as hell but when you learn to carry on, the real fun begins!! From the outside looking in, the photography game all looks quite glamorous which the end result certainly does. What folks don’t see are the 16 hour days in 110 degree heat put in to get the shot, the 4am call times for light, the all-nighters my dream team and I put to get retouched images over to a client before their print deadline, and the 100’s of emails that go back and forth for each and every production. There are no sick days in this kind of work. You could call it sweat equity or you could call it true grit… if you live your life as a photographer, you know what I’m talking about. It is a prerequisite for anyone going after their passion. It doesn’t matter if I am working on a large scale production of a small footprint one, I treat them all the same. I put 120% into every job and so does my dream team! The struggles are worth it if it’s your ultimate passion!

Please tell us about Dixie Dixon Productions.
Dixie Dixon Inc. is basically a full-service production company (Dreamteam) for the creation of still imagery and video projects!! Our biggest passion is bringing brands visions to life and making sure everyone on set has a blast in the process!! We work with ad agencies, brands, and magazines to create rad content for their advertising campaigns!! I serve as the photographer/director while Nancy Franks handles all of the production sides from planning shoots to location scouting/invoicing and Eric Jang is the crew chief and lighting director on every job!! We work with various makeup artists, stylists, models, and crew depending on the job!!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up an only child- had such a blast with mama and papa bear (the 3 Musketeers) and I can remember returning home from vacations with 20 rolls of film to develop!!! That got expensive; I am sure they are happy that we all mostly shoot digital now 😉 !!
