Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Rocket.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dayo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started back when I was in undergrad at UNT. In 2015, I would bring my phone to connect to the aux at every apartment party. I had a pretty legit song selection and knew songs that would keep the crowd lit. After doing this for about a month, I had a brief conversation with a couple of my friends who were well known on campus at the time and told them that I wanted to become a DJ. The first question they asked me is “what would your dj name be” I told them DJ Rock head because that was my nickname throughout high school. And it didn’t turn out well they fired me up so bad lol and came to an agreement that it would be better that I go by Dj Rocket because it would easy for branding purposes. They gave me a suggestion of dj’s to watch on campus (DJ Twalk). So I introduced myself to him and told him I wanted to DJ and would ask him for advice etc. he eventually he allowed me to follow him to various events and watch him DJ. Months later, I bought my first mixer and would start doing smaller events and the rest was history from there.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been easy by any means. There were times I wanted to quit so bad. A majority of my friends were Nigerian, so they were my hardest critics. When I first started, I would go to parties and I had some pretty trash transitions even after making my first mix and sending it to my friends they straight up told me I was a horrible dj and should stop. But as passionate as I was I used it as fuel and eventually ended up proving them wrong and breaking barriers. It was tough I went through depressed moments cause of how harsh people were when reviewing me as a dj.
DJ Rocket – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a DJ, I specialize in being versatile in a craft that is changing each and everyday. I would say I’m known for being able to create some of the unthinkable transitions and fusing afro-beats and hip hop together in a way that has never been done before.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has to be opening up for Rema.
