Thanks for sharing your story with us Donice. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I always had a passion for all things beauty. I started wearing and applying eyelash strips and tabs on others when I was 16 years old. I grew a fascination with lashes and makeup but would never make a job or “career path” of it. In 2016, I had just given birth to my 5th daughter.
I was on maternity leave and suffering from postpartum depression, I needed something to uplift me. It was almost a month after giving birth, I came across a post regarding training from a well-known lash artist I had been following since 2011.
The training was being ran on a special, and I couldn’t pass it up. I became a lash artist May 2016. That August, I stepped out on faith and left my full-time job I was working to focus not only on raising my children but also to focus on my continuation of education and my lash artistry/business.
My love for lashing was more enhanced because of my love of giving and wanting to help other women feel beautiful. Now, I am 2 1/2 years in the lashing industry, fully self-employed, and also a motivator. I also provide a hands-on demonstration to new as well as current artists. I am currently looking into producing a lash line.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being self-employed has its ups and its downs. It has waves of being profitable. One of the main struggles I’ve had along the road is finding balance with being a full-time stay-at-home mommy raising now, six children, being a full-time student, as well as a wife. All of these things are at the top of my priority list right along with my business.
When I’m focusing on school, business can sometimes suffer, when I’m always focusing on motherhood and being a wife, I may have to shut the schedule down to have family time and juggle the kiddos. I recently gave birth in July. My entire pregnancy I suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum and also went into preterm labor, putting me on bed rest.
Business most definitely suffered. But I persevered after having the baby. I overcame by somewhat finding a medium. It’s always been about balance with me. I’m still struggling, but… I’m overcoming some of the obstacles being thrown my way!!!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pretty Bliinks By DPollock – what should we know?
So the name of my business is Pretty Bliinks By DPollock. I specialize in all things lashes, primarily eyelash extensions. I’m mainly known for my extremely dramatic volume lashes. What sets me apart from others is the fact that every time you come into my studio, you will be greeted with love. I pray over all of my clients.
Every person I’ve laid my hands upon, they’ve received a prayer as well as warm/well wishes and regards. Being spiritual, it is what I do. I can’t work any other way! I am proud of the fact that my clients KNOW this about me and the fact that I’ve earned respect as well as love in the lash industry here in Dallas.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Oh my goodness YES! I have several mentors that have been there for me as well as my trainer who blessed me with that training special two years ago. Also most importantly, my husband, Mr. Michael Pollock, he, along with my children, have been my biggest motivation.
KeKe Speed with Haute Pink extensions, Daria McKenzie(Lavishing Lashes) and Sakinah Karriem (Realize Real Eyes) have pushed me and mentored me with so much love and inspiration. Of course, God and my clients are the major keys to the success of my business. They keep me going.
