Meet Donna Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Smith.

Hi Donna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a 16-year-old mom in 1978. I had office jobs working in accounts payable, I always lived paycheck to paycheck but knew there were bigger things out there for me to accomplish. I wanted to be a fashion designer or a buyer for department stores but was not able to attend college. Then in 1992, I landed a sales position and soon realized that if I wanted to make money without a college degree that sales was the place to be. I got a job in the freight industry and was able to support myself and my son for the first time without the struggle of living paycheck to paycheck for the first time. I always enjoyed dressing up to go to work and looking my best. My dream was to open a boutique and own my own business for many many years. I am finally in a position to make this happen. I started working on James Lynn Designs in April of 2021. I took the chance and had my opening on September 1. I started with e-commerce sales and was very fortunate that I had such wonderful family and friends that supported me from everything to modeling for me to purchasing my clothes. I took it further and started doing vendor fairs and soon realized that my goal was to open my own boutique. The time has finally arrived. I am opening James Lynn Designs a brick and mortar. This boutique will be a place that other entrepreneurs dreams can come true as it will be a shared space boutique. I am excited to see where this journey takes us all.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been somewhat rocky, the fact that I have never owned a business. and was not sure how to even get started… But with the help of my lord and savior and with family and so many friends helping along the way there is no possible way that this dream could come true.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I spent the first part of my career working in accounting. The second part working in Insurance which I was very successful at. I decided to make a switch and I ended up in healthcare working as Marketing director for Nursing Homes. Now the third part of my life will be doing what I have always wanted to do and that is to open this boutique, James Lynn Designs. Which is named after my Grand Sons, Easton Lynn, and Cooper James.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best? =
If it wasn’t for YouTube and God, boy I don’t know where I would be right now trying to make this work. YouTube is your friend. haha
