Today we’d like to introduce you to Donye Da Don.
Hi Donye, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Everything started when I was 16. I use to have a little notebook I would keep at the house and write little songs and rhymes in when I would come home from school and rap to myself on different beats I would find on YouTube. My Dad seen my gift and borrowed an iPad from a church we attended and brought it back home to see where I could take my talents. We hooked up all the small equipment we had and headed straight for his closet and got work using GarageBand to complete some of the songs I had in my notebook. As we did them, I would listen and be amazed at first but I slowly gave it up because it simply wasn’t the sound, I was looking for myself. Skipping to when I was 18, I would still write my little rhymes in my book and it was also my senior year so I had already had a plan to go to college and pursue being a psychologist. One day, the school announced a “senior top dawg” competition which only had a select few of senior boys show off their talents in a competition. I signed up and figured I could rap on stage to a song I’ve been working on for a while. When it was showtime, it was more of an exciting feeling than nervous before I hit the stage because I knew I had that song memorized. When it was my time to perform, I got on stage and rocked out! I was hopping around, rapping my song, and what made it more interesting was the crowd getting involved with me. I loved every single moment of it and that’s when I knew I have to keep going on this. That specific song is called “Wyd” so I had to get it officially recorded so I found an engineer in Grand Prairie that hooked the song up for me! That was first official song that I released during the summer! Fast-forwarding to today, I have my own MacBook, mic, and talents to make the songs into something magical. I still don’t have state-of-the-art equipment but I have a drive and a heart to keep pursuing what I love without having the fact of being a dropout from college distract me from my goals because at the end of the day, this is my true passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve had nights where I would question if this life is really for me. I’ve had thoughts of self-doubt and low self-esteem when a song doesn’t come out the way I want it but I kept going because everything I pursue will be a process and I understand that completely now. “Even when it comes to your own family doubting your outcome, you have to keep pushing Donye” that’s is exactly what I told myself
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I rap but I could also sing, you would just have to catch me on a good day to sing though! I specialize in rapping for the majority. I am known for not cursing in my music. Many people ask me why I don’t curse or use profanity in my music and I feel as though for myself, I don’t need to curse in order to get my point across or go as hard as the next artist. It’s nothing when you can curse and talk about nothing in your music and I’m just not that type of guy. I’m not the typical “gun-slinging, drug selling, drug-taking” machine that it seems like everyone else wants to be. I’m more than that and I’m proud of myself for standing away from the crowd and making my own crowd.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would give my biggest shoutout to God himself because without him, none of what I’m doing could even be possible. Bryce Holly AKA 3KBryce has been to every single show with me on stage and turns up with me every single time as my right-hand man. He has never let me down and continues to say “I’m only doing this because you my brother and I believe in your dreams but other than that I am not a rapper” and I love him for his consistency and love for his brother. Sierra Gee deserves more than anyone the most credit for my developing career because that’s where I really get my drive to be the best I can be and I get that through her. She’s helped me so much promotions and music, I don’t know what I could’ve done without her so far in my career. Big shoutout to my parents who are in my life supporting me all the way through and my siblings that keep on telling me I can do it no matter who says I can’t. And a huge shoutout to the artist “Chief Keef” for overcoming his obstacles and showing me, anyone can do it. I’ve watched countless videos of Chief Keef’s concerts and always imagined myself on stage rocking out like he rocks out. He’s a huge inspiration to me and my rap career and my favorite artist!
