Meet Doreen Milano of Visions to Excellence and Big Ideas Small Business in Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doreen Milano.

Doreen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in family businesses; at 18 I was operating three of the family corporations. I moved from smaller to larger automotive dealerships. Within a few years, it was evident I had a talent for helping owners move from losses to profitability. I then moved onto larger companies within the Fortune 500, continuing to apply what I had learned from a very young age. I learned that working through failing companies in the corporate arena, it was to put spit and polish on the company before being sold so that the corporation can recoup the losses. The problem was that we got profitable by building tight teams, only for those people to lose their jobs when the company was sold.

So in 2010, I opened my own company helping business owners so that they never needed a specialist to “fix” their company. Owners of companies I have assisted have become exceedingly wealthy (if that was their goal). Others have thrived and made community outreach a priority. Either way, I am blessed to have had the opportunity to work with great people making their dreams a reality.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Roads are never smooth if you are risking everything! Stepping out, being yourself, and risking judgement is always scary. Having confidence even if your terrified is a learned skillset!

Learning a new way to sell your services again a learned skillset. Recognizing that your customer is not the person in front of you but the scared person in the corner is another learned skill. People are afraid of their greatness! Myself included.

Please tell us about Visions to Excellence and Big Ideas Small Business.
Visions to Excellence is an Executive Coaching/Business Coaching company I created to help small to mid-market businesses build profitability. Starting with the foundation of the company, we work through the blockages to people and profits. We have a keen eye for healthy business cultures and assist businesses in creating the right culture. We teach executives how to build their company with a profit focus. We also emphasize the need for giving back to the community.

Big Ideas Small Business is a TV program I started on the OBBM Network showcasing local businesses and how they have made it work to inspire other business owners to keep moving no matter what! Most proud of my clients.

What were you like growing up?
I was a sponge, a thirst for knowledge. In an Italian family full of business owners, knowledge about business was plentiful. I was a driver from the start, take what is given and run with it. At five my Grandmother was supposed to pick me up from kindergarten. She was a no show so I took it upon myself to walk to her house through Daly City, CA. When I arrived, she was not there, but Marco, who owned the little Italian Deli on the corner across from her house, was open. So Marco and I talked, I told him the story (now 5 pm), and we waited for my grandmother.

Needless to say, she was understandable angry as she stormed into the shop. I stood up on top of the pickle barrel I was sitting on and stomped my foot! Hands-on hips, I stated in an assertive voice, “Where were you? I was scared to death! It was getting late so I took care of myself and went to your house where I knew it would be safe.” My grandmother stated her excuse and I calmly said,” I am a kid! there is no excuse for being 4 hours late”. She grabbed my hand and said, ” I’m calling your father,” to which I replied, “I would love to talk to him.”
