Meet Dorette Noorhasan, MD of CCRM DFW in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorette Noorhasan, MD.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Noorhasan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a mom, wife, author, and fertility physician who has also been a fertility patient. I am board-certified in both Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. I have been in private practice for eleven years, the last eight of which has been helping build and grow families here in the Dallas – Fort Worth area. I know what it is like to walk in my patients’ shoes. My husband and I met at a much later stage in life and had problems having a child. We underwent five rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF is a process where a woman takes injections to make her ovaries produce eggs and the eggs are removed in a simple procedure, fertilized with sperm and embryos created).

Of those five rounds, we only got one good embryo. That embryo was transferred to a gestational carrier (gestational surrogate) who carried our son for us. It is because of my gestational carrier’s kindness. I am a mother today. I, too, understand the roller-coaster ride that my patients undergo when they have their hopes up thinking that this cycle was going to work, only to find despair a few weeks later when they are starting over again. It is a tough journey and not talked about enough. One in eight women struggles with infertility and one in four with miscarriage. I decided that this topic was too taboo for too long. Hence I wrote two books. The first is entitled “Miracle Baby: A Fertility Doctor’s Fight for Motherhood.” This book is a story of hope, perseverance and love. There are two parallel stories in this book. The first is my own personal struggles with infertility and how we became parents. The second is my personal life story of being a daughter in an immigrant family and the many adverse events we had to overcome. You will smile while reading this book and you will also cry. The book gets deep into our core feelings. But, do not worry, there is a happy ending to the book. 🙂

The second book is called “The Fertility Manual: Reproductive Options for Your Family.” What I have found over the years is that many medical terms are very difficult for patients. I wanted to write a book that broke down infertility to its basics. It is not a book meant to give medical advice, but a book that will equip you with the knowledge you need to ask your doctor the right questions about your care. It is also a book that you can give to your family members or friends so that they know what you are going through and can be supportive.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is not a smooth road for any of us. I too, have faced many challenges. I juggle everyday the multiple hats that I wear. Many times it appears to the world that I have it together, but I know the limitations of my own human existence. I would encourage everyone to stay motivated at whatever they set their minds out to do. Setbacks are just speed bumps in the road to the final destination.

CCRM DFW – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the Medical Director at CCRM DFW. CCRM is a network of fertility clinics. We are best known for our very high pregnancy success rates. Our labs are state-of-the-art with equipment with the latest bells and whistles. CCRM DFW is a full-service clinic that provides fertility evaluation, including hystersalpingograms (HSGs to see if a woman’s tubes are open), semen analysis, ultrasounds and blood testing. Treatment options include pills like clomiphene citrate and letrozole, intrauterine insemination (IUI – putting the sperm sample back into the uterus), in vitro fertilization (IVF where a woman takes injections to make her ovaries produce eggs, the eggs are then surgically removed under anesthesia and subsequently fertilized with sperm to create embryos) and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT – allows us to biopsy the embryo and test the embryo for certain genetic disorders or a full aneuploidy screening to know if the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes and/or gene regions) prior to the transfer of the embryo to the uterus.

We also offer egg freezing for the young woman who wants to wait to have a family. CCRM DFW is the only fertility clinic in DFW that has its own hereditary cancer genetics lab, where we can test for genes like BRCA, a gene that codes for breast and ovarian cancer. I am most proud of two things: (1) my amazing staff who do a fantastic job every day taking care of our patients and (2) our resilient, hopeful patients who put themselves through treatments in order to start or continue growing their families.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have been blessed to have many amazing moments in my career. I can tell you about the aspects of my job that I enjoy. The two most favorite parts of my job are first seeing my patients face light up when they come in for their first pregnancy ultrasound and they hear the baby’s heartbeat and secondly, when the babies stop by to visit me after birth. I really enjoy holding the babies and taking pictures with them.
