Meet Dr. Field Harrison of MINT dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Field Harrison.

Dr. Harrison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Whenever I speak, I tell the audience not to start a business if they are not the best in world at that thing. You can only be the best if you are very passionate about that thing.

My passion for dentistry started on a mission trip, with my first mentor, Dr. Kevin Seidler. His practice is in the Colony, he is a great dentist, and Christian man. Dr. Seidler recruited me to come with his ministry “Serving Him,” which served the dental needs (at no cost) to orphans and underprivileged people in Romania. This was his way of sharing God’s love with everyone. I was 19 at the time, and I assisted him with extractions. It was there I felt God called me to be a dentist. Seven years later, I was one of the youngest dentists in country. I must say that I felt insecure about my age (I felt like Dougie Houser). I founded MINT when I was 28, and by the time I was 30, MINT was the busiest dental office in Dallas. We literally could not answer the phones. I had invented a cosmetic procedure, with Dr. Nora Kweik (my first associate doctor) to lengthen teeth in conjunction with veneers. It allowed healing in just 2 days from the 8-week standard healing rate from crown lengthening surgery. It also gave a superior result that looked MUCH better. MINT’s reputation scored and we were doing a cosmetic case almost every day. This also allowed us to recruit the best of the best dentists, because every dentist wanted to learn this technique. Cosmetic dentistry is the gold standard of how a dentist is judged by other dentists, and our “look book” is unbelievable. If you are a dentist, you want to learn this technique. Our innovation didn’t stop there. At that point, we had the best minds in dentistry. We became a “dental think-tank”. We took apart every technique and tweaked to make it better. There is not a single procedure we do that we have not modified to be better. Dental schools teach that a 10 percent complication rate is acceptable. At Mint, our complication rate is .001 percent. Due to Mint becoming a company at this point, it scares some people who like the local office feel, but at Mint you still get the local, boutique office feel, only better. I am the CEO and I am a dentist. Ultimately, I hold my dentists accountable to be great. If a dentist isn’t great, I will remove them. It gives us a competitive advantage because most dentists who are bad, have no idea how bad they are. The general public has no idea either. So if you are a patient at MINT, you get to have the peace of mind that the doctor who is taking care of you, would not work here unless I have marked them as a great dentist. Most dental chains have a private equity guy at the top and there is a battle between the CEO who is not a dentist and only values the bottom line. In those such companies, the dentists who will work there that value patient care, get no support in their effort to administer it (with cheap materials, and no training). We are the opposite. MINT dentists feel blessed to work at MINT. Our dentists are provided with the best materials, they learn the best techniques, and they get paid way above the going rate. We have hundreds of dentists who are waiting for an opportunity to work here. We take the time to train dentists, which in our industry, is unheard of. Imagine a heart surgeon who went to 15 years of school and has 5 years’ experience going to work at a new hospital. Then, before he starts, getting retrained by the best heart surgeon in world, how much better would they would be…? This is what we do for our dentists. No one else trains like MINT. It requires a doctor that is humble and hungry enough to be the best in world at what they do, and at MINT, we accept nothing less. If you give the best product at an affordable price… your business will succeed. This holds true whether you’re selling tires or dentistry. I also recognize God’s doing. I am just doing my best to be his hands and feet. I am striving to run the company according to his will. If that means expanding, then great. If that means not expanding, then we won’t. No matter what, I would rather be in his will, than mine. He has already done more than I could ever thought or imagined for MINT dentistry.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are new struggles every day. There is a reason why what we are doing has never been done before, because it is near impossible. Trying to make the dental visit perfect clinically and fun for the patient is a constant work in progress. Our differentiating factor is that we care; we care about every complaint, and every good review. This is my living. This is my life. This is not a company I plan to sell. This guides my decisions and makes them easier. When you are a company for sale, you may cut corners because it won’t be your responsibility in the long run. When you plan on this being your legacy, you don’t take short cuts.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with MINT Dentistry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
MINT is a “top of the line” luxury dental company that offers patients dentists who work as a team, extraordinary prices, and an insurance department that handles everything. Plus, Mint offers incredible payment plans and industry changing techniques. We hire only the most talented artists – true General and Cosmetic Dentists – and then train them to MINT’s exacting standards.

I am an awarded cosmetic dentist, who invented a cosmetic teeth lengthening procedure, and the founder and CEO of MINT Dentistry.

I am so proud of our amazing employees. We have the absolute best staff in dentistry. We support dozens of charities, but I am most proud of our reputation. When I hear second hand how many doctors and dental schools respect MINT. When another dentist comes in to be a patient and I see over 10,000 positive online reviews, I can’t help but grin like my 4-year-old.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how beautiful Dallas is. I love the people of Dallas. I love how faithful this city is, being in the bible belt is a blessing (with so many great churches) and I think we are blessed for it. We enjoy affordable housing, a great job market, and a great city. I travel often. The more I travel, the more I love Dallas. It’s clean, with so much to do, it’s just a beautiful city. I feel like Dallas has just been discovered by the rest of America, and traffic is hopefully something we can overcome in near future as the population grows like crazy.
