Meet Dr. Hollen Meyer of Functional Health & Wellness in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Hollen Meyer.

Dr. Meyer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I was always in activities…but…probably not the type of activities one would expect a 6-year old, blonde hair, blue-eyed, little girl to be involved. In my early years, I was actually a BMX Racer…3rd in the Nation by the time I was 11-years old. I was never very tall…often referred to as a ‘runt’; however, I was also determined to be good at high-jump. I surpassed many odds and expectations, and went to the Junior Olympics twice.

I lead with this only to illustrate that if you were to challenge me to do something, my determination and perseverance would see it through to completion. I am trained to WIN and influence…even if I lose a thousand times to obtain the WIN.

However, when my sister challenged me to go without sugar for a full day. I thought to myself – SIMPLE! And so the short journey began…by the time it was 11am, I was already experiencing hypoglycemic symptoms: feeling weird, tingling, headache, weak, narrowed peripheral vision, to name a few. I needed some sugar…FAST! And this is the roller coaster I was on for the rest of the day. This was a wake-up call that something needed to change and I was not healthy at this time in my life. Did I forget to mention that I had also gained ~30 pounds at this time? I was on the road to easily becoming Type 2 Diabetic. As I researched this condition, I was horrified and disgusted! Horrified at the complications of Diabetes and disgusted with the conventional model of treatment (Drug Therapy) only to expect the disease to get worse over time and the complications inevitable most of the time.

That’s when I dedicated my life to offer a solution for people that would get to the root cause of dis-ease and allow the body to heal itself. I knew there had to be a better way than drugs! Besides, I was taught all my life to “Just Say No” to drugs, right? With the influence of my sister and many wonderful people, I chose to attend Chiropractic College after my undergrad. Throughout my journey as a Doctor of Chiropractic, I have also acquired additional education in Functional Endocrinology, Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis, Clinical Nutrition. I am also very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with some amazing doctors at Functional Health & Wellness.

In addition to treating patients, I also feel led to serve our fellow-doctors around the country to increase their revenue streams and service lines with the upmost quality to provide a more well-rounded healthcare plan for the patients.

One of the greatest honors I can receive is being invited to speak and share my knowledge and life experiences on various subject matters with large and small groups. My love for public speaking stems from my desire to INSPIRE, EMPOWER, and DEVELOP LEADERS. I really enjoy working with people that want to play an ACTIVE role in their own lives! I want to inspire those near and far to be better and do better in order to experience the full potential God has planned for us! Ephesians 3:20 states, “Now to Him who is able to do IMMEASURABLY MORE than all we ask or imagine according to HIS POWER that is at work WITHIN US.” If we are able to tap into even an ounce of what God has been preparing FOR us and preparing US for…I honestly believe we would be blown away at the possibilities. This is true in health, business, relationships, and every aspect of our lives.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I like to refer to “struggles” as “Challenge and Growth Opportunities.” And there have been many of these opportunities along the way, for which I am grateful. These moments typical appear when I feel led to step out of my comfort zone and do something BIG or DARING…from the perspective of most doctors/friends/colleagues. I have realized that not everyone will approve…not everyone will like the decision…and something I’ve had to come to grips with is that…not everyone will like me!

But then again, if my mission was to get everyone to like me…I should be selling ice
cream instead! Hehe!

What I have also realized is that the only opinion of me that really matters is that opinion of God (and my husband, that’s pretty important too…HA!) It is God and the love and support of my husband, Brett, that help transition ANY challenge into a GROWTH opportunity.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Functional Health & Wellness – what should we know?
At Functional Health & Wellness, we have many doctors with different specialties that collaborate to design and customize care-plans for each individual patient. We feel that we can do more together, allopathic and western medicine, than apart. We look beyond the label of the disease. We use a very simple, results-driven, approach that seeks to remove the underlying causes of symptoms, based on scientific data and testing.

As treatment is implemented, the body begins to heal from the inside-out.

We strive to minimize (and eliminate) the body’s need for medication when possible.

Common conditions we treat: Back pain, Neck pain, joint pain, Sciatica, Numbness/Tingling, headaches, poor energy, difficulty losing weight, foggy brain, and more.

Conditions we specialize in: Type 2 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Adrenal Fatigue, and Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Hypothyroidism.

What sets us apart from others is our unique ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals from different specialties. We also have a great working relationship with many doctors in our area.

Our most proud moments are ALWAYS (hands-down) when our patients tell us how their lives have changed…been saved! Yes, we strive to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, reduce glucose readings, reduce medications…BUT… the moments we LIVE FOR are when they tell us they feel like they have a future, their marriage has been saved, they get to see their grandchildren grow up, they can make it up the bleachers to watch the ball game, they can go on that dream vacation now!!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Most of the qualities or characteristics associated with my success honestly stem from my childhood. My parents taught me SO much!!

My mom is the essence of love and class…she taught me to love ALL people, care for those in need, and fight for those that need a voice. She taught me to do all things with dignity, integrity, and class. She taught me about the power of God’s love for us.

My dad was the driving force of perseverance, dedication, and desire, He taught me that in order to be the absolute best, you must work harder and smarter than anyone on the planet…then do a little bit more! He also taught me how to lose, how to win, respect others, and have an honest evaluation of yourself. He taught me that in order to be better and do better, you must always have a coach that will ask more of you than you ask of yourself.

And last but certainly not least, my husband has taught me about love and grace, only to name a few. He is the best example of showing grace…and he has taught me how to show grace and mercy on myself, as well as those around me. He is the perfect balance in my life!
