Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jerome M Bierschenk.
VOICES of Fort Worth, the newest vocal ensemble in the Fort Worth music scene, gave its premiere performance on May 1, 2012, in conjunction with the Wesleyan Chorale in a concert presented in Martin Hall on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University. Both groups were conducted by Dr. Bierschenk, who is the Music Department Chairman at Texas Wesleyan University, and also serves as Artistic Director of the new group.
VOICES is a consort of highly skilled singers whose vocal blend and exceptional reading skills and musicianship combine to create a unique presentation that spans every musical period from early Renaissance to the 21st century. Specializing in a cappella literature, the vocal chamber ensemble creates the full spectrum of vocal colors ranging from the most intense and dramatic dissonance to the most palliative and soothing consonance.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It actually HAS been a smooth road because the singers are so passionate about singing in the group. We are fortunate to be in a culturally rich part of North Texas. One of our challenges is getting the word out about the group, but we are slowly, but surely building an audience base, and it has grown every year.
Voices of Fort Worth – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As I mentioned earlier, we are a chamber choir that specializes in a cappella music – that is, music with no accompaniment. This is the most challenging type of singing, as each member must be confident in their own part, and cannot depend on another singer to help them find their pitches. The a cappella choral sound is very unique and beautiful. There are many fine choirs in Fort Worth, but as far as I am aware, there are no other choral groups who perform exclusively a cappella music.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In terms of success, a musical ensemble defines success as mastery of the music which results in a fine performance. Voices of Fort Worth’s mission statement is: to preserve and promote the art of a cappella singing through the performance of quality choral music. Our success is in presenting high-quality music that continues this art form which has been a tradition for centuries.
