Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Joseph Adams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Adams. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In early adulthood, I got interested in weight training and began to workout diligently for many years, and like many, I encountered injuries. I was introduced to chiropractic by a friend. I had not considered it in the past, but I vividly remember how I was able to get relief very quickly and it was quite impressive.
Around that time, I was working in the fabrication and design industry and I was looking to make a career change. My siblings are all in the medical field and I remember my sister specifically telling me that chiropractic may be the perfect option for me because I was so used to using my hands from design work and also because I really enjoy physical fitness and a wellness lifestyle. I started doing my research and ultimately decided to go to Parker University in Dallas. I mustered up the courage to move across the country from Hilton Head to Dallas and began my chiropractic journey.
During the course of chiropractic college, I ended up injuring my hip from a bad fall and began to suffer from chronic pain. This drove me to be very interested in helping people with challenging pain conditions that need a more integrated approach. Originally I thought I was going to follow the journey of sports chiropractic because that was how I began, but it’s interesting how life can take you in a completely different direction.
Due to my injury, chronic pain, and my drive to help heal others, I began diving into as many advanced techniques as I could get my hands on, and I also heavily explored integrative care and clinical neurology; clinical neurology is the study of using therapy to improve brain function. I was fortunate to get an internship at an integrative clinic neurology facility where we treated some of the most complex head, neck, and neurological conditions in the world. This is ultimately what ended up shaping my clinical philosophy. And if it hadn’t been for chiropractic school, I wouldn’t have met my wife (Dr. Jordan) or have the family I have now. We met the first day of orientation for school, and the rest is history. We are both chiropractors at Calibration Chiropractic, we’ve been happily married for four years, and we have two young kids.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most journeys, some parts were smooth and some parts had challenges and hurdles. Chiropractic college itself was taxing – physically and mentally. We had to do five years of study condensed into 3 and 1/2 years. Throughout the program, you are tested constantly and at the same time, need to master the hands-on skills to be able to deliver an adjustment. I spent additional time learning the business aspects of running an office and getting as much experience in learning as many approaches to care as I could. One time my wife and I, along with three other classmates, drove 23 hours straight through on a Friday to a weekend training in Vegas, and then the 23 hours back on a Sunday only to arrive just hours before our first final of finals week on Monday morning. I guess you could say that we were passionate about learning how to be the best we could be and would cram in as many opportunities to do so as we could.
Currently the challenge is in maintaining a healthy work-life balance while investing in our practice, our profession, and our community. We have two small kids at home, a 2 month old and a 3 year old; I sit on two local boards – the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce and Mansfield Rotary – and I’m actively involved in the Texas Chiropractic Association; I am completing my thesis for my masters; and I am constantly invested in learning new clinical applications to best help the patients in our office. Additionally, my wife also serves on local committees and regularly volunteers. We are thrilled to be able to serve in the capacity that we currently do, but it takes a lot of intentionality to ensure we are showing up as our best self in all areas that we are committed to, especially when it comes to quality time with each other and our kids.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
At Calibration Chiropractic and Functional Health, we’re in the business of giving people their lives back. We know what it’s like to struggle with a health challenge and how frustrating it is to not be able to do the things you love or need to do. This is why we used cutting-edge technology and integrated care that draws from different specialties, including physical therapy, chiropractic, neurological rehab, nutrition, and mindset to help people overcome their challenges. The bottom line is that we take the WHOLE person into account when we deliver care because people deserve answers, hope, and healing.
My focus and area of expertise is in the head, neck, and neurological conditions, as well as stress-based illness. I have postgraduate education in migraine and headache treatment, as well as chronic neck pain, and I enjoy working with people who have neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s. Over the years, I’ve become fascinated with the autonomic portion of the central nervous system (the rest and digest versus fight and flight portion) and how, when that system is out of balance, it can lead to significant health challenges for people.
My wife is passionate about women’s health and wellness across all ages, including preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum, and she helps women live healthier lives through her gentle approach to care and community-based yoga classes.
Our practice is mostly known for the high quality of care that we give and our unique take on treating the whole person. You’re not a number here. We’re a relationship office and when you’re here, you are treated like family. The whole team strives to give each and every person who walks through our doors, everything we’ve got to get them better, not just once, but on every visit. We genuinely listen, we constantly learn how to become better at what we do, and we deliver the care you need for the results you want and deserve.
Nothing brings us more joy than being able to help somebody heal. We are driven by the number of times we have had patients come in and tell us that they are back to doing what they love doing. When you do that, you truly give someone their life back.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was when I had a patient tell me that even though it said “chiropractor” on our door, I was “much more than that and I was the only person who was going to be able to help her husband recover from his health challenges.” It was in that moment that I knew I was on the right path with the care we provide our patients. Because of people like her and her husband, I strive to constantly hone my skills and learn more so that I can continually be better at what I do and be able to get people to the next level of health.
