Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michael Burks Jr.
Dr. Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Late in my life, I started realizing I was a complete mess. I was unemployed, facing reposition and contemplating bankruptcy. My confidence was shot and I was ready to give up. Every day I struggled just to get out of bed and every morning the alarm clock would ring and I knew I should get up but anxiety rushed in and I’d hit the snooze button instead. I was defeated by my own defeated thinking and always told myself….how was I supposed to achieve anything. I mean look at my life.
I was the son of two drug and alcohol-abusing parents.
I was homeless and a high school dropout at 17 years old.
I didn’t know my real father until I was 31.
I was mentally, emotionally and physically abused well into my adult years.
I was an underachiever and fearful that I’d never amount to anything as people told me.
It was not until my wife starting getting ill and my 18-year-old daughter made that call to inform me she was pregnant that I made a decision to live in my purpose.
Ten years later, I now hold a doctorate degree in Business Management from Texas Tech Rawls College of Business. I began finding my space and how to carve my own lane in the midst of pursuing my degree.
I also serve as the COO of The One Unified Resource Foundation, INC. (OUR Foundation). Where our mission is focused on the need for the betterment of the community through self-enhancement and community engagement. Through the OUR Foundation, OUR MEN(tors) program that supports young men, ages 12-18, through positive male role models and the BE MEN Curriculum. Lastly, I am a very active member of the DFW Urban League Young Professionals and their Leadership Development Committee, where I am helping spearhead programs that help leaders in DFW grow professionally.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing I have achieved was easy. Just in the last ten years, I have experienced the majority of these challenges accompanied by the mental and emotional issues that I consistently have to be aware of and adjust so that they do not derail my life. Self-doubt, anxiety, depression, and anger are among those issues that stem from various experiences in my life that made those goals I chose to pursue more difficult.
In the last ten years, I have lost four close family member (two from my side of the family and two from my wife side), I had a big scare with my daughter being misdiagnosed with leukemia during her first pregnancy with my grand-daughter on top of that I chose to go full time with consulting, pursue my doctorate in business at the same time.
I know you’re asking how did you make it through all that? and all I can say that I learned from my mentors and coaches that nothing is achieved alone. I was able to overcome adversity and accomplish my target goal by using my support system.. leaning of my wife, children, friends, family, mentors, and colleagues were the only way I was going to make it through the hills and mountains I was navigating.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is amazing! There is no doubt about that. The opportunities and market here are growing every day and if anyone tells you otherwise is not engaged enough. As a consultant, I have seen so many businessmen and women thrive from their counsel. Not only in my practice but in others as well.
Dallas offers a wide range of industries for growing consultants. This city has 1,500 corporate headquarters in over 100 industries of business and it’s only getting bigger.
For the corporate professionals or entrepreneurs that are thinking of moving here to Dallas and starting a thriving career, I say do it. But I would warn them to not take any opportunity lightly and to not waste time with anyone who does not share their interests and drive. I would also inform them that Dallas is big and you would need to form alliances, networks, and partnerships to assure their goals and dreams have room to grow.
