Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. NaKisha Jackson, PT, WCS.
Dr. Jackson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a free-spirited, driven person who knew I wanted to be a physical therapist at age 15 and a business owner by the time I graduated from college. I worked as a traveling therapist throughout the US to hone my skills for treatment styles and to learn how to manage the constant change and fluidity that comes with healthcare. I have worked in various settings and discovered that patient care was not as simple as it should be. I ventured out on my own a little over three years ago to deliver my specialty care comprehensively. I love entrepreneurship and the freedom that comes with it will always outweigh the risks for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth is relative. Knowing what you want and releasing control of how it shows up is the easiest way to describe my road. I tried early on in my career to specialize in one thing, and it turned out that I was to specialize in something completely different. I have been told no, declined for loans, and lost bids for businesses, but all that was to allow me to better decide what I want out of life. I have always been independent even as an employee. I am a forward thinker and believe that obstacles are only obstacles if you identify them as such. There is always a way to get something done if it is meant for you to do it.
Please tell us about your practice.
I am a pelvic health physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor rehabilitation for women and men. Those needs range from issues in pregnancy and postpartum, prostatectomy after-care, bowel or bladder incontinence, to pelvic pain, to name a few. We pride ourselves on our ability to build strong relationships. We don’t try to convince anyone of anything. We don’t sell anything. We share what we know to be true based on evidence, outcomes, and knowledge of how things should work compared to what the individual is experiencing in the moment or the recent past. We foster relationships between ourselves and our clients based on personal responsibility with assistance, meaning we help each other with our roles. We stray from interdependence, something that I think can help forge a more sustainable healthcare system in the future. Wellness is wholeness, and human beings are multi-faceted. When we get joy out of life, our bodies respond well to this.
Dr. Joe Dispenza, a neuroscientist and Deepak Chopra, internist and endocrinologist, have done great work on the mind, body, spirit connection that explains it better than I could, but the take away is you have to address it all to some extent. We emphasize moderation vs. deprivation or excess and promote self-awareness to be able to distinguish the difference. When you become our client, we provide a space to improve your wellness. We provide outlets for your emotional needs, products for supplemental wellness, and community events the have health with a twist. Our next event is September 12, 2020. It is a yoga event with Dray Gardner of Silent Savasana Yoga, Las Vegas, at Deep Ellum Art Co in Dallas. Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the spirit of business. Business start-up is encouraged in this city and supported. The vast land space is a benefit to living, but it does pose challenges to one-site firms. People like to stay close to home, but I have been fortunate to have clients that do not care how far away we are.
