Meet Dr. Tricia Seymour-Barrier, PhD, EdD of Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tricia Seymour-Barrier, PhD, EdD.

Hi Dr. Tricia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Life is art, full of texture. I was blessed to grow up with parents who encouraged both my creativity and intellectual curiosity. From an early age, I was immersed in music lessons, art classes, museums, theater, opera, fashion shows, and extensive travel. I was always encouraged to be creative, curious, and uniquely myself.

Creativity has been a constant thread throughout my life. My mother was an imaginative writer, poet, and artist, and I am deeply grateful to have been raised in an environment that celebrated artistic exploration: art, music, dance, theatre, crafting, baking, and more. While none of these became my chosen profession, entrepreneurship allowed me the freedom to infuse creativity into everything I do.

I am a self-taught artist who continues to grow through a variety of in-person and online art classes. I love learning, experimenting, and challenging myself. My work explores the mystical side of life, using color, texture, and movement to create pieces that invite pause and reflection. Each painting is a conversation with the unseen, blending intuition with technique, and I find joy in continually exploring new styles and approaches.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been smooth. As an entrepreneur, the journey is inherently bumpy—there never seems to be enough time or money to do everything. Along the way, life took priority and my art was pushed to the background, becoming more of a part-time passion than a way of living. In pursuing my business goals, I lost sight of the importance of making space for what truly brings joy. Now that I am retired, I have the freedom to return fully to my creative practice and focus on my artistic expression.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am best known for my mixed media artwork, which intertwines my personal and professional journey. My work is deeply informed by my background as a Transpersonal Psychologist, giving me a unique and intimate perspective on the human experience. From a young age, I felt an innate pull toward understanding the mystery of the psyche, both in its conscious and unconscious realms. This early calling has evolved into a passionate exploration through visionary art, where I seek to express the complex and layered states of being that make up our inner world.

My art is an extension of my spiritual and intuitive connection with Source. It’s guided by an ever-present flow of energy that imbues each piece with texture, vibrance, and movement. These qualities reflect the dynamic nature of the psyche, the ebb and flow of thoughts, emotions, and experiences that shape our existence.

I use abstraction as a language to access deeper emotional and spiritual states, allowing my work to emerge through listening rather than control. My paintings are not constructed narratives but rather received through a state of flow where gesture, color, and movement become carriers of inner and spiritual resonance. Each canvas becomes a conduit for what exists beneath conscious thought, translating subtle psychological and energetic shifts into visual form.

I aim for my work to serve as a bridge – a portal for viewers to feel and connect with the deeper aspects of themselves. My hope is that each person who encounters my art will resonate with its emotional depth, allowing them to reflect on their own journey and engage more fully with their true essence. Through this process, I invite viewers to pause, feel, and connect, engaging abstraction not as a window onto the outer world, but as a shared experience of spiritual presence and transformation.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would not be where I am without the unwavering love and support of my mother and my husband, both of whom have been constant cheerleaders on my journey. My mother nurtured my creativity with encouragement and praise, always reminding me that trying something new was never a failure, only a lesson in learning and growth. Her belief gave me the confidence to explore without fear.

I’m blessed to have a husband who continues to love and support me both in words and actions. He encourages me to submit my work to exhibitions, gifts me art supplies, does the artwork framing, and stands beside me at my art openings. Their belief in me has been instrumental to my success, providing both the emotional support and confidence needed to keep creating.
