Meet Andrew Sherman of Drewlio Photo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Sherman.

Andrew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was pursuing acting and music with a rock band in Los Angeles since college. I had some success but mostly not the level I had hoped. California was offering free community college classes for people over 40 looking to change careers. I took a few video editing courses and landed a job with a show called THE CHEVY MUSIC SHOWCASE. It featured musicians interviewing each other from the DFW music scene. Even though I was living in L.A., I fell in love with the local music scene in Dallas.

I loved it so much I moved here in 2016. I thought I’d fall into the music scene but wasn’t sure how that would look. I was looking for jobs on Craigslist and it seemed like I could buy a cheap camera and shoot interviews to edit. That led to taking photos of bands and models and whatever anyone wanted. I guess people think Im good because I am shooting photos and videos full time and am the house photographer at Deep Ellum Art Co.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Its been a long road to get to where I am. I have been struggling in the arts my whole life but photography seems to be what I was meant to do. It’s super fun and always different. I am still working my way up in the scene but I feel more welcome for my work here than I did my entire time in Los Angeles.

Drewlio Photo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have been focusing on shooting photos of bands. I do a lot of live shows and am branching out to promotional videos as well. Since I was pursuing music for so long, I have a very deep understanding of what kind of photos bands want and need. I also include world advice for promoting themselves as well. I also love to shoot artsy type shoots with models.

I have done shoots for restaurants, bars, save the dates, kids, models and bands. I feel like I can go into a situation and get great shots every time no matter if its something that’s new or very familiar. My goal is to capture the subject as they are- I’m not trying to make anyone look better (or worse,) just the essence of the subject.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I love respect for my work, which I am starting to get. It actually surprises me when I meet someone and then they say, “wait, are you Drewlio Photo?” It’s not something I ever expected. I feel like I am on the path to success. Only doing the shoots I want and having the luxury to pick and choose what to work on would be the next level.
