Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Ferris.
Dustin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The original founder of the Art & Antique Restorations, my grandfather Maurice, was diagnosed with macular degeneration; in only a few years’ time, he knew his eyesight would be gone. In an effort to carry on the work started decades ago, he began to train me in depth by 2014.
Meanwhile, it became necessary in my life to embark of a journey of sobriety. Things had become difficult of my own making. However, the opportunity for growth and a new connection with my grandfather inspired me to not only grow personally, but alongside my business. Years later, I am proud to expand the business to Dallas, Texas and carry on the work of restoring magnificent works of priceless value.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy- especially the first year. Transitioning to a youthful owner like myself has consistently put me at a disadvantage in an elder dominated field. The first year was marked by finishing 29 difficult pieces that my grandfather was suddenly unable to finish, free of charge. I was able to prove my worth and establish a presence. It’s so important to me to save a dying art form as I am the only one from my generation with such a deep passion for the work.
Art & Antique Restorations – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is specially known for being a one-stop-shop for antique restoration. Nowhere else can people find clear and colored glass and crystal work, leather repair, custom alterations, antique furniture refinishing, porcelain repair showing no signs of damage, painting and paper cleaning and repair, metalwork and so much more. I am proud to expand and carry on the vision of an art form that seemingly will lose its place as the current owners unfortunately retire. Being young, I work fast, diligently and adapt to modern methodology and the age of convenience, without sacrificing the quality of work and attention to detail.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It has been, and continues to be to carry on the Ferris family business. I owe everything to my grandfather and the original master, Maurice Ferris.
