D’Vaughn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started on the merry-go-round in elementary school handing out homemade business cards I designed with crayons and construction paper, offering “advice for 25 cents”. Sure, the other kids tore up my cards and laughed at me, but that didn’t stop me. Only then, I didn’t know I’d be offering business advice some 20 years later and make a living from it. I’ve always been entrepreneurial in spirit. I was the kid setting up lemonade stands in the neighborhood. I had to mow grass as a chore growing up, so I thought I might as well be mowing our neighbor’s lawn for money as well. Some ventures succeeded, and some failed, but I learned that nine out of ten businesses would fail at a young age.
Many people get discouraged by those statistics, and in my mind, I knew I needed to start at least ten businesses; today I’ve launched over twenty. I currently operate three successful companies, with Marqui Management being one of my most successful ventures. I’ve managed to become an Official Forbes Business Council Member, winning half a dozen awards for leadership, quality of service, and holding the top agency in my area. My firm was also recently announced one of the “Top SEO Agencies in Plano” by Expertise.com.
At Marqui Management, we started off just helping the local startup here and there with web design, social media marketing, or SEO, to building, managing, and marketing brand presences all over the world for universities, insurance firms, real estate companies, car dealerships, and health care providers, to name a few. Colleagues consider me to already be successful, having accomplished a lot at my age, yet, I feel I have barely scratched the surface of my potential and goals. The Marine Corps taught me discipline through pain, which I previously had some grasp of, but it also taught me to never be complacent or comfortable in my surroundings.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting and running a successful business has never been easy. It frustrates me to see all the ads online about how you can start an e-commerce business or social media marketing agency online and be making tons of money in a few weeks. In the real world, it takes years to build relationships and connections with people and businesses. The greatest struggle came early on, having to compete with other companies who were doing what we did for decades. How were we different? What could we offer that the other companies could not? Just putting that simple message together takes months of careful consideration and planning, but it’s a crucial element to marketing. Our biggest challenge, like many other companies, was defining our brand voice and message.
Marqui Management – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

What are your business’ leads searching in Google before they find you? Chances are they have at least three or four questions they are asking. How often does your website show up? Are you able to answer those questions before they contact your business? If so, you’ve pre-qualified your leads, which makes sales much more seamless. That’s what I’ve done with Marqui Management, and that is what I do for many other companies as well.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success would be the same definition I give ‘money,’ it is simply the measure of one’s ambition. It’s not an end goal or solution but a constant battle and journey. I will consider myself a success when I have surpassed many of the milestones that I aspire to accomplish, have left a legacy, and have done something that has achieved the status of being legendary.
