Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Tarver.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dylan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in North Texas playing shows with my punk/indie bands in high-school. I was kicked out of my house at an early age around 15 or 16 and with no where to stay, I ended up crashing at my bandmate’s huge refugee house in Flower Mound with a bunch of other semi-homeless teenagers. During that time I did nothing but go to school and play guitar. After a falling out with my bandmate I had to find another place to live. My dad and my sister had just fled to California so my only option was to live at a budget suites until I graduated high-school. This is when really started writing music non-stop and had cathartic passion to preform. After I graduated high-school I moved to Lake Tahoe, California with my cat to work at a ski resort. While I was out there by myself I really learned how to self-identify and created my solo/collaborative project, The Altitude. with songs I had written in high school as well as new songs I wrote while in Tahoe. I moved back to North Texas to study at UNT. In Denton I started a house venue called Fannin. I found an amazing music scene in Denton TX playing with great musicians that I love. I am super grateful to have to opportunities to preform my music with/for all these amazing people in North Texas and can’t wait to release some new material.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a bumpy road with a scenic view. It is hard to get the motivation to do anything at all sometimes and life has a way of holding me back from what I really want to do. But, with every challenge the success is that much more rewarding. the sweet isn’t as sweet without the bitter, and If the road was smooth I wouldn’t have to slow down and enjoy the view.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
The Altitude is just a place for me put the music I create and a chance for me to get on stage and throw a temper tantrum. Fannin is a place to give back to the music community that gave me a home. I love to host shows for local and touring bands as well as provide a place for touring bands to crash and create a space for people to create; whether that be through music, film, fashion, or art.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is when I’m able to connect with someone thru music whether that be in performance or in my recordings. Getting my first ever fan mail and having people I’ve never met screaming lyrics I wrote is the most successful I have ever felt. Anytime my music or venue helps people with themselves or something they are going through is when I consider myself successful.
